Avast Pro, UI Failed To Load.
« on: May 19, 2020, 08:05:11 AM »
Hi guys, new user here. Just looking for some answers.

I've been subscribed to Avast Pro for a while now. I'm just trying to do some offline scanning in safe mode, as I have read that some malware/malicious actors can ensure your antivirus turns up clean sometimes. I've just tried to start an offline scan in safe mode, and received an error of "UI Failed to load, this is embarrassing", or something to that effect. Using MalwareBytes (The trial edition), has shown to me that I can scan on safe mode,  and it is scanning as I type this message. it seems to have been Avast that's the issue.

What I'm asking is, is it normal to not be able to load up Avast in safe mode, or is this something that needs to be looked in to?

It's worth saying I believe I am safe when browsing/online. I did download an adware type of program on this PC at some point, which I had gotten rid of by uninstalling it, and then for clarity, reset my PC. It turned out that the program was on my PC once again. I followed the same steps and have not had a real problem since.

PC is x64 Win10. It's geared towards gaming.

Possibly valuable edit: Kaspersky Pro (paid for) edition also did not load in Safe Mode. For a while I had used Avast, had this issue in Safe mode, switched to Malware bytes, now back to Avast. All scans by Avast/MB have come back clean when booted in normal operating mode. I tried to scan recently (before the current scan that is going on right now) using MalwareBytes in Safe mode/offline, MalwareBytes took up to 8 hours to scan and due to unrelated reasons, I had run out of time and had to shut down my PC to carry out errands. This prompted me to look up some information and I have read that safe mode scans take longer.

I've also got hitmanpro, TDSSkiller, and MalwareBytes Anti rootkit, cleaner also cleans my pc and checks it's health regularly. All come back clean.

What prompted all of this was I had found my task manager, when opens, would have System Interrupts at 100% usage, which would then descend from 100% to around normal usage for my PC, which I have found could be either a hardware issue, or a malicious program, however my PC hasn't really slowed down as a result of it.

I shall be back in this thread periodically with updates of how the scan is progressing/results of scan

Thank you all in advance, if any other details are required please let me know,

So MalwareBytes came back clean on my offline scan. I have just attempted to run the boot scan, following the directions on the page, and Windows loaded up as normal. I didn't see any screens indicating any type of scan that was performed.

Upon it's reboot, I did notice that MalwareBytes was still installed. Did this cause Avast to fail the boot scan?

@Asyn, thank you for clarity, I do own Premium Security, I think I just use 'Pro' as a filler word for the paid version of a product.

Hey, guys. I was able to run it. I believe it may have conflicted with MalwareBytes. It came up as no infected files, etc. Peace of mind.

Apart from running the standard anti rootkit/malware programs I've mentioned (TDSSkiller, etc). What other software is recommended?

Thanks for all your help, too guys.
