Outlook/Exchange scanner not working
« on: July 08, 2005, 09:49:45 PM »
The Outlook/Exchange provider seems to have suddenly stopped working on my system, which consists of:

Toshiba laptop, Mobile Celeron, 256 MB memory
Windows XP Pro SP2, fully patched
Windows XP firewall (behind a D-Link router with firewall enabled)
    Outlook 2003, fully patched
    avast! Home Edition, version 4.6.665
VPS 0527-2 (current as of this writing)

I have the following real-time scanners installed and running:

    Instant Messaging
Internet Mail (for a secondary mail account using Outlook Express)
    Network Shield
    Outlook/Exchange
    Standard Shield
    Web Shield

When checking the status of the various providers, the Outlook/Exchange scanner is grayed out and indicates that it is "waiting for a subsystem to start." I realize that this generally means that Outlook is not running; however, this indication occurs even when Outlook is running and open on the desktop. I also noted that the "Scanned count" remains at zero even though numerous messages have been received by Outlook. This would imply that the Outlook/Exchange scanner is in fact not working.

I have searched this forum for suggestions and have tried the following:

    (1) In Outlook 2003, verified that the "avast! 4" plug-in is listed and its box checked in the "Add-In Manager"
    (2) Tried a "Repair" using the Windows "Add or Remove Programs" applet
    (3) Uninstalled avast! completely, rebooted, and reinstalled

None of these actions has made a difference. Any other suggestions for how to enable the Outlook/Exchange scanner would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Ray

UPDATE:

After doing some more checking, I discovered that Outlook had disabled the avast! Outlook/Exchange add-in, even though it was checked in Outlook's Options menu.

It appears to be working again.

Sorry for the false alarm.
