Avast Settings
« on: May 05, 2020, 01:35:10 PM »
Hi,

Yesterday I saw there was an update to Avast so I installed it through the UI. When it had finished it asked to reboot, so I did.

When the PC began to reboot I was getting a BSOD; inaccessible boot device. This happened a few times so I reinstalled Avast and everything worked perfectly again.

The problem I'm now having is my backup of Avast settings isn't restoring the settings. Tried a reboot etc but nothing changes, I navigate to the settings backup file, click on it but nothing happens.

Is this a known bug or does anyone have a workaround for it?

Thx.

I have held back on Program Updates for some time now, having set Program Updates to Manual.

I used to even take part in Avast beta testing and the betas were pretty bulletproof, with rarely any serious issues.

Now it is a total ball game, first there is Alpha testing then Beta testing and it supposedly gets through these short trials only for major issues to be found when released for a regular update.  What I can't understand is how it gets through these checks only for something new to be found upon regular release.

This shouldn't happen, errors need to be found and corrected before release as it does nothing for reputation.  I know the numbers in those reporting problems in the forums is small, but it could be the tip of the iceberg.

Should these almost monthly program updates (of the last couple of years) be consolidated to One, Two or Four per year, leaving longer for Alpha and Beta testing before release ?

I have rarely had any serious issues with Avast Updates, am I the exception to the issues I see in the forums, I don't know.  I just see all of this increased activity in the forums on a new regular program release.

avast users have been looking for a stable release for at least 10 years.
It never seems to arrive, the offerings go from one set of problems to another.

People who are close to the product have been numbed and think this is the way it is supposed to be.
It's only when you step away for a while do you see it for what it is.

<snip>

I certainly can't agree with that, 10 years is a massive over exaggeration.

I feel it has more to do with the timing being sometime after the public offering of Avast on the stock market, followed by the purchase of AVG.  And more certainly I feel after the push for monthly program updates.  This really doesn't leave time for a period of consolidation and get rid of some of the niggles.

This pretty much coincides with my decision not to be involved with beta testing and some time after that I switched program updates to Manual.  So this certainly isn't ten years by any stretch of the imagination.

I think it started to turn for the worse somewhere around version 7 or 8.
The forums started to fill with users having issues with basic functionality.
Some bad choices were made in the product direction, it got too complicated, poor technical designs
(remember the fiasco about trying to create a virtual machine on everybody's PC?)
and it got too intrusive - that gave rise to a whole new set of questions

Perhaps not 10 years, but close to it, in my opinion

Dev-Info: Hi, it should be fixed in 20.4. During investigation devs reported that there is a workaround: just try it twice, the second atempt should help.

I've tried this and it never worked. Tried 4, 5 and 6 times.

Thought there might have been a small update to fix this in the meantime tbh.

Thanks for the input though  :)

For me, trying it more than once hasn't made any change.
Importing settings isn't working.

Seems Avast are dragging their heels on this one.  I've reported it several times (and never received a reply) but the bug still exists.
