Confirm buttons missing from Component Stop dialog
« on: April 20, 2020, 03:13:01 PM »
I just purchased Avast Premium and installed it over the weekend.
I was having difficulties with Zoom which started after I installed Avast, so I tried to shut off the Firewall temporarily.

When I tried to pause it through the tray icon or through the main interface brings up the "Component Stop" dialog which dims the entire screen. It asks, "Are  you sure you want to stop Firewall?" But there are no buttons allowing me to choose.

It's not just Firewall that has the problem. Any attempt I make to temporarily pause a service/shield brings up the "Component Stop" screen, and the dialog comes up, dims my entire screen and does not allow me to confirm or cancel.

If I hit Enter or Esc keys, the screen un-dims and the dialog goes away as if I had chosen "Cancel".

Please see the attached image.

How can I get past this and be able to control my own computer again? Do I have to uninstall Avast and use another product?

Version 20.2.2401 (build 20.2.5130.570)

Repair Avast:
1. Avast GUI -> Settings -> Troubleshooting
2. Click on 'REPAIR APP'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

I am also having the same issues. Trying to disable core shields for 10 minutes but I get the confirmation screen which dims my other screens but no buttons to click yes or no. My details are the same as OP. Windows 10 Malwarebytes free disabled.

I did try the repair function and then restart the computer. That did not resolve the issue. Any updates on this?

Hi, Asyn & Dylan108,

I tried the solution Asyn provided, but I still get the same popup screen.

This happens when attempting to shut off any of the core shields or when I try to un-check the "Enable Self-Defense" setting in the Settings > General > Troubleshooting screen.

What is the next step?

1. Download Avast Premium Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premium_security_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

PS: Regarding Avast & Malwarebytes, see: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/200324-exclusions-for-avast-users/

Is Avast Firewall set to Public (default) or Private?  Public mode is more restrictive.

Thanks again, Asyn. Unfortunately, no joy.

I followed your instructions and rebooted into Safe Mode, ran AvastClear.exe, then rebooted into the regular environment and installed Avast with the standalone/offline installer.

After finishing that procedure, I tried disabling the Firewall (which is set to Private mode @rocksteady) and was still confronted with the Component Stop dialog with no visible buttons.

Trying to disable the Self-Protection feature brings up the same dialog with the same lack of buttons.

Any ideas for what I can try next?

Same issue. Windows 10 Pro 64bit. Tried every single suggestion above, even installing the beta (20.4.2410 (build 20.4.5312.576))

As much as I like Avast, if I can't fix this issue soon I'll have to switch products.

I'm having the same issue and Avast needs to fix this NOW or I'm requesting a refund.    I have found a shi*y work around for anyone else having this issue.  The OK button must just be out of view.  If you hit the TAB key and then press enter, it will preform the action that you indicated.
