Icarus.exe
« on: July 04, 2020, 04:45:29 PM »
Perhaps it has been answered before, but:
  • what exactly does icarus.exe do
  • why is it called like that (reminds me of Deus Ex in no good connotations)
  • why doesn't Avast firewall remember my Allow
Thanks

1. what exactly does icarus.exe do
2. why doesn't Avast firewall remember my Allow
1. Dev-Info: Icarus is our, relatively new, micro-update system.
2. That's a known bug.

I am not sure, if avast people do read the bug report. Until today, the bug with the permanent reasking durin every day, if icarus is aloud to access to the internet, are still existennt. under these circumstances, I will not renew my license. I think, you will have only short time to fix this bug.

It isn't fixed in the latest beta either. :(
I rerereported it again, let's see... ::)

I am very disappointed that bug isn't dealt with by now!
It's an Avast file, what's the hold up?

Hi,
I'm very sorry for the annoying bug, we tried to fix it in the latest beta version but it turned out the fix is not sufficient for icarus process. We will do our best to fix it ASAP.
Best regards
HK

Would you be able to expand on that please as my searches indicate that it is malware, which it does look like as it is trying to open an unknown link in Estonia.  :o  I am therefore not allowing access out (continuously).   ::)

If it's signed by Avast, you should be ok.

I also questioned the name of Avast new "relatively new, micro-update system."
Does leave one wondering why name an Avast .exe after known malware.
As Asyn has stated, if it's signed by Avast then ok.

Oh, come on... do you really think that any known word or name hasn't already been used by some kind of malicious program in their file name?

The project was (for some reasons unknown to me) named Icarus - and that's what the corresponding file name is. It's a new updater that is currently only used for small tasks, but I believe it will eventually (hopefully soon) overtake all Avast updating - program, virus definitions, everything.

Is it that involved to change the name so it isn't detected? Without doing that, this will always raise questions.

No it is the other way around, malware creators use name of clean files as a trick

Oh look, here is one named schmidthouse.exe   ;)   https://virusscan.jotti.org/en-US/filescanjob/fbqu513omz
