avast is blocking firefox from working
« on: July 25, 2020, 11:15:10 PM »
There was an avast message saying that something from firefox was going to alter the windows register. Instead of clicking on terminate, i clicked the option to terminate but also save the settings. Now i cant do anything with firefox. I had to use Chrome to post here. Where do i delete that setting for firefox ? My avast version is 20.5.2415 build 20.5.5410.584

No problem here opening Firefox.
Can you provide additional information?

Avast showed a message saying that firefox was going to alter the windows registry. I clicked on the terminate option which also saves this setting for future occurrences. Now i cant use firefox. My avast versio is the free one. I just want to revert or delete the setting.

Sorry, I don't have a clue what setting that might be.
Hopefully someone who uses Firefox as their default browser can help you.
You could also try a clean install of Avst to see if that fixes your problem.

Clean Install of Avast:

1.  You would have to go through all of the AvastUI > Menu > Settings  to do that. But that wouldn't tell you what you had changed, painful.
2.  AvastUI > Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting > Reset all settings.

Avast could show its settings based on what the user did and make available a way to revert only some settings, like a firewall showing its custom settings...

The only option is to revert to the default settings

It gives you the option to backup your settings and to restore said settings.

If you chose not to do this, you are left in this position, not knowing what you changed.

Time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted.

It would be easier if it showed all custom settings. Besides, i suppose when it restores, it restores everything which was backuped at that time, and by showing custom settings, the user could restore just what he wants.

You can use the restore as many times as you like and save it to a location of your choice.  Backup the settings when you install would give you a start point, but that would effectively be the same as the reset all defaults option.

If you want to make some changes, back up your settings before doing it.  If you experience a problem restore the last backup.  Not dissimilar to windows restore points.

I was referring to a situation where i could have changed something and it didn't give any problems immediately, but would give problems later, maybe much later, when i would not remember what change have i made and when. I would not know what restore point to get.

In this case, today, my problem was with comodo firewall. I thought it was avast because avast shows more messages, specially about dangerous apps and sites. All i had to do was go to comodo where it showed blocked applications and unblock firefox. While on there i noticed it blocked other things on the same occasion without notifying me at all, and i unblocked  them too, as i though it was reasonable. Comodo system is better. No need to backup anything, no need to have restore points.
