We will need more information to be able to help you:
1. Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
2. What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
3. Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
4. Do you use a firewall? Which one?
5. Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
6. Any other security programs that could interfere?

If I'm understanding, you have trouble with Windows 98 and avast because you have McAffee antivirus installed in this computer?
Please, uninstall McAffe, clean your Registry (search the board for Registry Cleaners suggestions or you can find many free versions of these registry cleaners here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwregtools.html

To remove McAfee you need to do via Add/Remove and then the manual removal of the registry keys left behind with their on-line instructions.
They've released VSCleanupTool (http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/VSCleanupTool.exe) to do that either, just go to http://www.us.mcafee.com and click the Tech Support tab (provide your version number in Step 1 and select install/uninstall in Step 2). You can go to their user forum at http://www.forums.mcafeehelp.com if you should have problems or questions. Check http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=20560.msg172602#msg172602 also.

4. Do you use a firewall? Which one? none for w98...pls suggest 1
Comodo, Kerio, ZoneAlarm, Jetico, Sygate...
If you search avast board you'll find more...

6. Any other security programs that could interfere? none, mcaffe system scan was disable for reason slow system run and prefer to use avast!
Disable is not enough. Forget it. Uninstall completelly.
