Avast shields randomly turning off at startup
« on: August 27, 2020, 06:54:27 PM »
I've been having a problem lately with random shields turning off at startup. It is not Avast that warns me of this, it is a tiny red "x" on Windows security icon in the system tray. As you can guess, I often miss the little "x" and go about my business with one or more of my shields off until I happen to notice it. Sometimes it is the ransomware shield, sometimes the behavior shield, etc. It is usually one shield that is off, but today there were two shields turned off. I am worried that I will miss the windows security notice that my shield is off since Avast does not notify me itself.

I have already done the "repair app" procedure under troubleshooting twice and I still get random shields off at startup. So why is avast turning off shields when their default state should be on?

I have avast premium security with current subscription.

edit: My program version is: 20.6.2420(build 20.6.5495.588)

Do you have any other security based software installed ?
Did you do a Restart (full reboot) after the Repair ?

If so then try a clean reinstall:
1. - Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, avastclear.exe https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD. Make a note of the steps required or print the page.
2. - Download the latest Avast off-line installation file for your Avast Program (see https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=234638.0) and save to your HDD.

Follow the instructions in the link in 1.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

I also have Malwarebytes installed, but have been running Malwarebytes and Avast together for over 4 years with no issues until now.

and yes, I did full reboot after each repair.

The fact that things have been OK for 4 years doesn't mean there won't be any issues in the future.  Both programs are constantly updated and could come into conflict, especially if you have the MBAM Pro resident protection version (?).

Even the MBAM forum recommends that you exclude the Avast locations and vis-versa to avoid conflict.
