From the icons on your toolbar it look as you also have Avira Antivirus installed ?

i had just uninstalled Avira but had not yet rebooted for full removal before I installed Avast. Should I have rebooted first before installing Avast?

Yes, but even before rebooting you would need to use Avira's Uninstall Tool. Then reboot.

You also have to note that if you don't reboot before installing another av, some files won't delete, which is a problem. But in these days avs want you to restart anyway, even when removing from the control panel.

That is the important bit.

i.e. remove all traces of Avira by using their uninstall tool, then reboot, before installing Avast.
