I am curious If none of hte new features apply to me do I really need to get the new .335? will the iAVS updates continue to work on .319 that i still have

Yes, the new virus definition database will still work with the older version.  I don't recommend skiping program updates though.  This could cause a glitch should you later update the program itself.  This may or may not cause an exclusion of program files by skipping program updates.  If so, you may find yourself back on the board having to manually make changes to get things back on track again.  Does this help?

Hurricane, as far as you don't have any problems whatsoever it may in fact be wiser to not do the update... The virus DB updates will work just as well as in the latest version, of course...
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

Avast is updated to 4.1.335. thank you Citizens culpepper and Vlk. I have set program updates to automatic now.
