Firewall Does Not Work Correctly
« on: September 18, 2020, 12:16:21 AM »
For the past few weeks, I turn on my computer and I get a notification that Avast Firewall (and Windows Defender) are turned off.  This happens every day and while I used to be able to simply turn the firewall back on again by clicking the button on the Avast application (or even sometimes it will turn itself back on after about a second after the notification), this past week (9/13/2020 - 9/17/2020) that option does not work anymore.  Now I need to update, repair, or resubscribe to my Avast service (and even then that doesn't work I've spent $70 on Avast) and whenever I'm done, it tells me to restart my computer for the changes to take effect.  But then when the computer restarts, the firewall is turned off again, and I have to finagle with it some more, only for it to turn itself off the next day after shutting down my computer.

I need to know what is going on because I can't take much more of this.  This is costing too much time and money (and I'm starting to think it is impacting my PC speed as well, especially when trying to turn firewall back on) and ultimately I may just remove Avast altogether and rely solely on Windows Defender.  This is something I do NOT wish to do since Avast has a lot of neat extras that I use daily (one of them being the password add-on).

If anyone else has been having this problem recently and knows what I'm talking about, please post your findings here.  Anything I look up about this problem is from forum posts that are five years old and even then the answer is update/repair (which does not have a lasting effect as stated above).

Thank you for your help.

I have the same trouble using the Premium Security (Version20.6.2420 (koontiversio 20.6.5495.588). Every time I turn my computer on the PS and VPN are off. Why cannot they stay active? This really takes a lot of time to open them each time. Will somebody explain.

I have just installed the new version of Premium Security against Windows 10 and there is still a bug around the firewall which for me stopped working today and slowed me down trying to solve it. The Avast Firewall is not running in services.msc and when you access Premium Security it asks if you want to turn on the firewall and nothing happens, in the firewall Settings tab it thinks the firewall is on. As mentioned services.msc says it is not running and errors when you try to start it. Fortunately you can start the Defender firewall this way.
Can this concerning and new bug be resolved please?

20.7.2425 (build 20.7.5568.597)
OS Name   Microsoft Windows 10 Home
Version   10.0.19041 Build 19041
All I have is Avast security and Windows 10 security and I have not used any others before AVAST

I rebooted today and both AVAST Firewall and Windows Defenders Firewalls are off. I cannot start Avasts Firewall and can eventually start Windows Defender. In the Firewall tab of AVAST is shows off and cannot be moved. In the settings tab behind this it shows as on, but it not running in services.msc. Fixing and repair attempts yield nothing.
Happy to provide more info if needed.

I got this solution from Avast, it works for me, i hope it does for you.

Open Avast Premium Security -> Press Menu in the Top Right -> Settings -> General -> Troubleshooting -> scroll down to Reset all settings and click on Reset to Default and reboot your PC

It has also worked for me on the second attempt. (the first attempt after a restart caused the UI to fail) after a full reboot it is back and services say it is running. Happy for it ti be back, but I did pay for security and reliability. Thanks.

A reset will wipe out any custom setting you may have made. Just so you know.

This has been going on for me for the past two weeks as well.  Originally I thought it was my internet because it has been spotty recently, but then I started to notice that Avast was starting up before everything else, and began to think it was the problem, I come here and see this thread.

The first few days I had to just wait a little bit and it would auto fix itself in 1 or 2 minutes.  However, as of late, I have to really fanagle stuff, I have to restart a few times, run scan and wait for it to catch that the firewall is off and click fix, I run just about every test and then after a restart or two it works just fine.

The more frustrating part is it seems to bog down my internet connection while my firewall is off.

OS windows 10 64bit home edition 19041.508
I only have this antivirus on my computer and I'm running the latest version.

Its been a little frustrating to find not many people are experiencing this.

Repair Avast:
Open the Avast User Interface > Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting > Repair App. > Restart the Computer or,
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204

If Repair doesn't fix the problem, try the following:
If your Avast settings are not the default settings and you want them restored after the Clean Install, follow this before removing Avast.

Clean Install of Avast:

Well that didn't work, and Avast will not let me uninstall.  It sticks at 0% had it there for 30 minutes before I hit the restart key and it warned me not to shut the computer down while it was uninstalling.  I clicked restart anyways and it came back up, Avast was still installed, and it was back to good old having to fanagle to get my firewall back on.

Today I am contemplating turning Avast off completely and canceling all my subs.  I refuse to have this on my computer if it won't work properly and I won't pay for a broken tool.  I hope there is a fix for this soon as I'm close to wiping the computer or just building a new one.  I've done Avast for almost 7 years now and it has had its problems, but never on such a scale that made me question if it was my internet companies fault or if it was a virus.

EDIT: Today I turned off Avast completely.  Disabled all the modules and ran the computer without it.  Windows defender Firewall turned on,  I played some games and then the power went out.  When the power came back on, my computer started up and told me that there was no firewall just like before and it wouldn't turn on.  I restarted the computer and the firewall was still off, so I reactivated All the modules and the firewall came on.  I am unsure of what this means or if this is even JUST an Avast problem anymore.  I haven't turned my computer off again yet, sort of don't want to lose the momentum.
