BugBear Virus
« on: September 29, 2006, 09:41:32 AM »
Hello,

I think that My computer is infected by the BugBear Virus.
When I type on the ^ key of the keyboard (yes I'm french and I really need to use this accent :'() then I had ^^ on the screen and impossible to add a letter.
I saw on Internet that it's the sign of the BugBear Virus, quite old virus but still alive.

I don't know why Avast didn't detected this virus and how to remove it from my computer (Avast still doesn't detect this Virus)

My computer : Windows XP SP2 - Avast and Windows Defender for antispyware.

Thanks

Hi Cover,

I can't see any reference to the behaviour you describe in any of the write-ups for BugBear. Where did you see this information?

Your right to say that this is an old virus- the Sophos write-up is from 2002- and avast! should detect it, unless it is a new variant that has emerged.

Could you post a HijackThis! log for us to look at please?

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html

You could also try a scan with the excellent Ewido:

http://www.ewido.net/en/

(The free version scans for and removes malware- Trojans, spyware etc.)

Thanks for your message.

I found the explanation for Bugbear on a French Forum but the only disagrement I have is this double ^. But It's really problematic for writing french!

Here's an analysis of your log, saved for three days:

http://hijackthis.de/logfiles/143b1615bcee78ead64cf4b0f4bc4951.html

Please note that entries highlighted always require futher investigation.

However, this one definitely raises concern:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [startkey] C:\WINDOWS\system32\server.exe

A web search indicates that the process may be legitimate, or may be malicious, so the question is, do you have Novell's server suite installed on your computer?

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/server/

In the meantime, I suggest a scan with Ewido anti-malware, which has a free scanner and will remove any malware found:

It's OK now, after several restart and scan with avast and ewido I don't have anymore the problem.

Thanks a lot.

If you still have the entry I mentioned above, you still need to answer this question:

Quote
Do you have Novell's server suite installed on your computer?

If the answer is no, it's malware and it needs dealing with!

Then the entry may be a Trojan.

Please run HijackThis! again. Ewido may have removed a Trojan. If the entry has gone, then no problem.

If it is still there, you can submit the file for analysis at VirusTotal, or try an online scan from Kaspersky. This should confirm if the file is malicious:
