Avast free updated itself last night. Huge memory leak after the restart and through 2 more restarts and constant 25-50% cpu usage depending on if it was one of two avast programs operating.

Problems disappeared upon the removal of avast.

Recently I updated Avast Premium, since yesterday I suffer form a huge memory leak, I can't work longer than between half an hour and an hour, depending which programs I use. What to do, for I need it for my office.
1. Download Avast Premium Security: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premium_security_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.
Thanks for helping me! I have two questions b4 I start doing this:
1) Can I start the removal tool from any directory (like the download directory)...
2) Has this solution been proven?
1. Yes.
2. It's worth a try.

Well I did, but my pc does not startup in Safe mode anymore, it just continues to Windows 8.1, despite my pressing F4. I have 100% CPU at the start, my memory fills up fast, therefore I can't set Windows to startup in safemode, I am now consulting for help, I let you know my progress.

I can confirm your problem and have reported it to Avast.

Continual total system lock ups after a few minutes. Requires a hard reboot, as PC become non-responsive. Removed AVAST and system works perfectly now. Seems like 20.7 has serious issues when combined with the latest Win 10 updates. I need my PC for work so no real time to investigate further but massive memory leak seems like a possibility as lock up happens over 10-15 seconds with response to mouse input getting jerky, screen redraws failing then total non responsive.

Strange since I have no problems with this version but did have memory leak problems while using the beta.
I uninstalled the beta and went back to the stable version. ???

Hi, I would like to ask you about AV uninstall utility. Did you follow https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility? If yes, can you please start avastclear.exe after "standard" boot to windows? (-> not in safe mode). Utility should ask you if you want to start it from safe mode and will do it for you if you confirm it. I tried it on my machines and it always worked. You can also check https://www.digitalcitizen.life/5-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-8-windows-81 and try different manual methods how to boot to safe mode on you OS but as I mentioned before - our utility should do it for you. Thank you

Lukas

When I used it, it did not reboot into Safe Mode, it booted back into the windows 10 home screen. Acted just like a restart.
