Avast Custom Install
« on: October 01, 2020, 09:35:33 PM »
I Just wanted to check if this was normal since it doesn't appear like it is. When I go to do a custom install of avast 20.8 there are multiples of certain components(See attached image).

OS: Windows 8.1
Current Avast Version: 18.8.2356 (build 18.8.4084.409)

Here's the sha-256 for the offline installer i downloaded from "https://www.avast.com/installation-files". It's the installer I'm using to do the custom install.
SHA-256: 646da91ee0a81c025ad2315e11ba9ea09b38a58ba1d336ee454e6dcf4281e5a3

I would say it is correct as they have no idea what you may want, all you have to do is uncheck those that you don't want.

Me I generally do the Minimal Install option that has most unchecked and you subsequent check the additional features that you want.

Noticed from @EternalLie sreenshot above that many Componernts are listed more than once!
I have never seen that before.
Is there an explaination for that?

Yes, some are listed twice and some shouldn't even show up in Free (esp. the ones for business products).

@EternalLie
It is unclear from your original post whether you actually have Avast Free 20.8 or 18.8 installed on Win 8.1.
Can you please clarify?

I have checked the SHA256 checksum you posted and it matches that for the 20.8 offline installer I downloaded on 30/10.

But it appears there is something badly amiss with that Components screenshot you posted. There should not be duplicate items.

It may be a good idea for you to do a uninstall (using avastclear.exe) of Avast then a clean install of 20.8.

I have Avast Free 18.8 installed on my computer. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I have also been having trouble doing an program update through avast. Around 50 seconds into the downloading the update it would stop and say "Last encountered error:Host unreachable", that's the reason I had to resort to just downloading the installer to update. I was wondering if both problems just had to do with me having such an old version of avast. I'll give your suggestion of a clean install a shot, it has been a while since I did a clean install.

Unless you have MS XP/Vista there should be no reason why you can't update your program version to the latest version.  So why it ends up showing 18.8 as the program version is petty strange.  More so given the SHA256 is identical to the one you gave for the off-line installation file and the one I downloaded for 20.8.2429.

Since you have installed the off-line installation file, did you do a system restart ?
That would be to complete the installation, especially if you had a previously installed version of avast ?

Sorry i forgot to say that I didn't go through with the installation of 20.8 once I saw multiples of so many components, it kind of scared me so I posted on here to figure out what was going on before installing.

Everything is good now though, I did a complete uninstall and now when I used the 20.8 installer everything showed up like it should without any duplicates or things from the paid version. The install went great an i already feel safer having avast fully updated, thank you to everyone who responded to my thread.  :)

@EternalLie
Good to hear all is now normal after a clean install of 20.8.
FYI. Some have found it a good to perform more than one Restart after a version update.
