SMART Scan no longer generating a Report Log

Since updating AVAST Free to Program Version 20.8.2429 (build 20.8.5653.561)
the Smart Scan no longer writes to C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\Viruses & Malware.txt

Has the location of the log file been changed?

On my system it is here "C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\Viruses & Malware.txt" and was last written to on 30/9/2020.  I'm not aware of a change of location, which would seem strange given all other scan reirts are there.


I last ran a Smart Scan in relation to a topic in the forum, whilst compiling this reply I ran the scan and it did not update that file.  So it looks like 20.8.2429 isn't updating that report file.  I have checked through the minefield that is the avast settings including the hidden geek:area and I can find no such setting to generate a report file as there is for other avast scans.

By Omission or Bug I'm not aware, I had previously had the Viruses & Malware.txt, but it would appear for those installing 20.8 as a 1st installation the report won't be generated, nor updated for those who do have the Viruses & Malware.txt file present.

   Thank you for taking the time to check this out.

The last time mine wrote to that file was for a scheduled Smart scan Sept 25, 2020 using the previous program version(20.7.2425 Sept 1 rel).
Historically , there is data in that file as far back as 2018.

Now, with the updated program version 20.8.2429 Sept 30 rel. it has stopped.

You have confirmed that it isn't something that I have done to goof things up.

After my reply I ran a Quick Scan and that didn't update the Quick Scan.txt file either, so it looks like it isn't just the Smart Scan.

Interestingly if you open the Settings > Protection > Virus Scans > Scan history - expand any very recent scan and that is able to return basic data on the scan.  As in the Quick scan that I ran but no update of the C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\ file/s.

So the information is stored somewhere ???

Looking at this further, I ran a Full Scan yesterday and that updated the report file.

I also ran a Quick Scan again this morning and that failed to update the report file but if you look in the scan history it was recorded.  So where this information is recorded to enable it to be retrieved in the Scan History, certainly not in the Report file folder.

Currently it would appear that only the Scan in the Custom Scan section of the Virus Scans aren't being recorded in the C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report\ file/s location.

I have always had logging set for all scans (and this carried over in program updates), how else do you think that prior reports were generated and updated (until this recent episode) ;)

Now that it is a single setting (rather than old versions were it had to be enabled per scan type basis) then surely it would work for ALL or NONE which isn't the case here.

But this UI without doubt is the pits, with settings scattered all over the place and especially the  Übersecret geek:area, how ordinary users cope is beyond me.

See what I mean about this user interface, Quick Scan was off, but previously had been enabled.  So the settings weren't carried over when this all changed.

As for the NOT so Smart Scan there is no such setting, no Advanced settings at all ???

So, I ran a smart scan and then wanted to find the log. I searched the web and that brought me to this topic.

Is this another facility that has been removed from Avast?

Renewal (Business user) is due in a couple of days and it looks like I'm going to be spending some time looking for an alternative anti-virus solution.
