Outgoing e-mail scan - where to I find this?
« on: October 02, 2006, 05:49:42 PM »
I had to re-download Avast after getting a new hard drive.  I can't forward or send messages in OUTLOOK EXPRESS.  I get the following error message:

The server does not support a SSL connection. Account: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Server: 'smtphm.sympatico.ca', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 OK', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

I called my ISP server (Sympatico) and was told to check Avast's "Outgoing e-mail scanner", but I don't know where to find this.

I'd really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Louise

Hi LThompson,
Welcome to the forum.
If my memory serves me, Sympatico used SSL.
avast! doesn't directly support SSL. There is a bypass by using stunnel
A search of this forum will also reveal many examples.
Hope this helps.  :)

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the 'stunnel' link, but because Avast worked successfully with my old system (with Sympatico high speed) for a year or more I don't think stunnel is necessary yet.  Can you think of any settings that I should be checking in Internet Explorer or Outlook Express or where this outgoing e-mail scanner resides?
Mnay thanks,
Louise

The server does not support a SSL connection. Account: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Server: 'smtphm.sympatico.ca', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 OK', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

This is a somewhat strange error in that it states that the server doesn't support SSL when I believe sympatico does. The problem comes from using SMTP port 25 for secure communication (SSL/TLS) and avast intercepts port 25 traffic to scan outbound email and it can't scan encrypted SSL email (that is the idea of secure email) when it is expecting unencrypted SMTP Protocol traffic.

By all accounts avast isn't able to issue a STARTTLS command so it falls over, sorry for not being able to explain this fully or correctly, I simply don't understand it not having to use SSL email. Where is Alan when you need him :D

However if you do a forums search for 'SSl sympatico' without the quotes as this has recently been discussed. This is the most relevant http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22372.msg185589#msg185589.
