Runaway CPU

I am evaluating Avast Home with plans to upgrade to Pro, but have run into an issue that may prevent me from proceeding.

I have a laptop running Windows 2000 SP4, fully patched and Outlook 2003 SP2, fully patched.
I connect to my email using IMAP.

Since installing Avast, when Outlook is open, the system will go intermittently go to 100% CPU and the system will become unusable for a couple of minutes.  If I stop all the Avast providers, the problem goes away.

I am currently testing the providers one at a time to find the offending component, but perhaps someone has already seen this?

Are you downloading any (large) files via P2P?
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

There was a similar report to this some time ago. 

That user found relief by unchecking the "Scan archive folders on open" box in the Scanner tab of the Outlook/Exchange provider.

Changes didn't help and the runaway component seems to be ashServ.exe, so stopping the email related providers (Outlook, Internet Email) doesn't help.

Just going to uninstall, don't have time to keep trying to debug.

Anytime I run any security check I: go offline; stop any service(s) not necessary; remove, either by software or manually, .tmp files; use Msconfig to unload any unnecessary start-ups; stop any desktop theme, etc.; reboot and run the check.

These domake a difference! ;)
