Unfortunately David, until Alwil steps in, all of this is just supposition.

Alwil, the weekend is over.... time to get back to work.  ;D ;D

David, are you using AntiKill feature of avast? (I mean, the beta of the avast 5)  ::)

If that is incorporated into 4.7.892 (which I doubt) then yes, that is why I queried self protection earlier in the thread, but I skipped the last avast beta trial and I believe the anti-kill beta of avast 5.

I think (hope) a full dump might help...

I did that and have 7zipped the file (thought that was better than winzip), unfortunately it is 291MB a bit too large to consider uploading on a dial-up connection. I have 1GB of RAM so the compression didn't come anywhere close to the 100-150MB you mentioned in the same topic. So I guess were out of luck on the dump upload.

Any other suggestions ?
Has anyone tried to replicate this ?

I have run some further tests as a result of t l s's post earlier and the fact that he usually used the "Stop On-Access Protection" prior to third party on-demand scans without problem, yet he too experienced the same hang if he just paused standard shield.

If I also use the "Stop On-Access Protection" before running third party on-demand scans no problem after the scan click the "Start On-Access Protection" and avast, standard shield is up a running and no hang. The same is true if I terminate Standard Shield, run the on-demand scan and then Start Standard Shield, no hang.

So what is the issue with pausing Standard Shield that causes this hang when Continue is pressed ?
What are the functional differences that might cause this ?

When a person who spends most of the day helping Alwils customers has a problem receiving help, something isn't right
in this "Help" forum. IMHO  :'(

DavidR has always been a long time respected user on this forum that has always assisted just about everybody that has a problem with avast!, and for this to go unnoticed by the Alwil team for as long as it has thus far has quite surprised me.

This along with that Microsoft (zulu) issue going on as well...

I would hope that they are just too busy working hard on 5.0 or something.

David, we need the dump. Without it, there's virtually no chance to analyse such a problem.

Do you have a CD burner? If so, a solution would be to put a CD with the dump file to an envelope and send it to our postal address. Alternatively, take it to the nearest Internet cafe (or a friend with broadband connection) and upload it to our ftp site...

Thanks!
Vlk

Maybe there's one other way to do it - analyse the dump on your computer. I.e. I'd instruct you how to install a debugger that can read the dump file, and what commands to use.

We could do this via IM (icq/msn/yahoo), for example. Or I could ring you.

What do you think?

I appreciate the offer of the direct contact via IM, unfortunately I don't use any IM program. I will run the dump again (I cleared out my dump file when it was clear I couldn't upload it on dial-up) and burn it to CD then send it to you.

Since it is possible to use the Stop On-Access Protection rather than Pause (for now) without the hang, it isn't urgent. However, I would like to get to the bottom of this and understand why this should happen (like you I'm sure) using Pause and Continue/Resume.
