They might be able to combine them.  For example, adding "Captcha" to PM dialog for "new users", judged by a certain rules such as
- limit PM to users older than month (exception are PMs to admin/moderators)
- limit PM to users with more than 25-50 posts (exception are PMs to admin/moderators)

Unfortunately we can make all the suggestions in the world but,
unless Alwil acts upon it, nothing will change.

The IPs the spammer's were using were the dynamic IPs from AOL. In fact unblockable, it's just all  AOL users or none.

It's not about blocking an IP - it's about using the latest version of the the forum software and configuring it properly...

Oh, and while I'm teaching you how to admin a forum, I suggest using the "Recount" function because I can't be the only person with "-1 messages"

Good Luck...

Yesterday, you said "No posts from me on that matter". How about sticking to that, please?

kubecj,

I don't often comment on forums because people tend to jump to conclusions and take the worst meaning of things...but I just want to say that I think you do a wonderful job.  I know you don't need me to say that, but there it is.  It's easy for people on the outside to criticize when they are not on your side of the fence.  Just know that there are quite a few of us that appreciate the effort you guys and gals put forth.

I got just one of those PM's yesterday, no email (have email notification turned off), and you know what the funniest part of all this was?

Because of the opening wording of the PM, it looked like it really was from an admin, warning that such spam was making the rounds here.

Hi malware fighters,

How come today that this was the top ranking find when googling for the search term "avast webforum", and how come?
http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/19674.html

How long is this going to harass us?

Hi Polonus,

Hard to say how long it will harass Alwil. Some folks have a memory like an Elephant. So hopefully not long.  :)

This actually had nothing to do with either Alwil or avast!

Spam happens in the best of places. We are actually having Spam Caserole for supper tonight.  ;D ;D
