what is this black empty Avast window ?
« on: December 10, 2020, 12:41:02 AM »
Hi,

I have an annoying black empty Avast window (image attached) that keeps blinking when I return from sleep ou navigating the web !
What is this? It is new from one week or so . Version  20.9.2437 (compilation 20.9.5758.615).
It even interrupts some typing of mine causing a lot of problems!
Please advise.

Thank you,

It might be two things:

1)Avast detects a malware, or may be from Ransomware Shield;
2)Avast requires your restart to update.

Try to update, as Asyn said, and see if it happens again.

Hi guys,

Thank you all.
The update launch date was dec 9th, but yesterday dec 9th when I checked it was still not available.
Today I managed to update to version 20.10.2442 MANUALLY because no matter what I try Avast never updates automatically for me...

Best regards,

Best regards,

Had you waited then it would probably have updated automatically in due course.  When released Avast can't update hundreds of millions of users at the same time.  So over an update cycle it would get to you.

Personally I have my Program updates set to Manual and only virus definitions set to Auto.

How long did you wait (?) as the update cycle could be a week or more to balance server load over hundreds of millions of users.

It shows a notification of availability but I always have had to update manually. Years already...

Are you sure it is truly on Auto as Notification (Ask) is in the options.

Hi,

Yes I'm sure. See the image attached.
Also I had already opened a case on this a long time ago but I ended giving up once none of the recommendations have worked.
And I'm not alone on this. Just search the forum and you will see.
See the image attached.

Tks.

Whilst there have been previous reports of this they are getting old and not so many as to be considered as effecting large numbers of Avast users.  Otherwise I would expect there would be much more in the forums, this can be easy to see when large numbers are effected as the forums are alive with it.

Some of these topics and are also considered to have been resolved for many of those users.

From your previous image attached in your first post.
I don't know if your case is exactly the same as many of those topics are reporting the window is very short duration and certainly not long enough for most to do a screenshot.

You don't say what recommendations you have tried, so I can't say if there is something that you haven't tried ?

Sorry but this topic that you started is about "what is this black empty Avast window ?"

The link goes to a topic unrelated to this popup "Virus definition updates don't update automatically" as far as I can see, there is no action taken relating to what you have done to try an resolve the empty Black Popup.

Unless as mentioned in that topic you have "installed Avast in another drive" and I don't know why you would need to do that.  What I also don't know is when the popup appears in trying to populate it, it is looking in the wrong place.

We have changed subject!
The empty black windows got fixed when I manually update the program and I've just comment I wish I didn't have to always do that manually.
