Two questions concerning file "Win32Pup:Gen" / Audacity download
« on: December 20, 2020, 01:24:25 AM »
Dear Avast-Experts,

I have two questions. Yesterday (Saturday) I ran a full scan of my laptop using Avast Premium Security. I was then shown a file called "Win32Pup:Gen", which I had apparently downloaded together with the freeware program Audacity. (I probably didn't download the program file from the official Audacity website, but from the fake website Audacity.de which I had not identified as such.) I found information posted in your forum that the above file was not malware, but adware. Nevertheless, I uninstalled Audacity and deleted the "Win32Pup: Gen" file.

I also wanted to delete all files from my hard drive that were found using the “Audacity” search. I came across the file "Audacity_is1" in an Avast subfolder (please check screenshot). Strangely enough, I can't delete this file. Even if I try to perform the deletion as an administrator in Windows 10, I only get the error message that I cannot perform the deletion without the necessary rights provided by the administrator (error message in German language in screenshot).

Can you please help me with these two questions:
1. Do you know if it is correct that the Win32Pup: Gen file that is distributed with Audacity software on non-official websites only contains adware?
2. How do I delete the Audacity_is1 file in the Avast subfolder?

I look forward to your answers. Thanks for your support!

Yours

Thomas S

1. No idea, but you can test the file at VT (https://www.virustotal.com).
2. No need to delete it from Avast (cache) subfolder.

I have Audacity with no problems, but it is not a recent download.
I dont see a /SWCUData folder in that location.
Is that folder dependant on which Avast components are selected, or something to do with the virus chest?

Not the chest, I think it's related to Cleanup.

That would explain it. Not one of my chosen components.
