Remove a subscription from a computer
« on: December 26, 2020, 08:15:20 PM »
How do I remove an Avast premium subscription from a computer. Uninstalling and reinstalling Avast doesn't do it. The subscription remains there automatically. Moreover, Avast leaves behind a crap load of files (including many executables) behind, but that's a question/discussion for another day.

I currently don't have access to the computer (on vacation). Of course, there must be a way to remove or invalidate the subscription being used by a device from one's Avast account settings accessible via the web, but I can't find this. I noticed that my Avast account showed that the subscription was still active on that computer. So, if the computer were to die, does this mean the subscriptions will continue to be registered as active on it forever? I'm asking because that computer is falling apart fast (and it's why I want to remove the subscription).

To summarize the two related questions (TL;DR):

  • How do you remove a subscription from a computer without the need to permanently uninstall Avast?
  • How do you remove a subscription from a dead device?

Thanks. That answers the second question. What about the first one: How do you remove a subscription from a computer without the need to permanently uninstall Avast?

You're welcome. If you don't want to uninstall Avast, switch to the free version.

That is exactly what I tried but it doesn't work (I explained this in the original post above).

I uninstalled and downloaded the latest installation file from Avast, but after reinstalling, the subscription was automatically recognized (clearly, Avast leaves behind a lot of things when you uninstall it). So is there a way to remove the subscription from the device so that I can default back to the free Avast on that device?

1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.
