New beta version 21.1.2443
« on: January 14, 2021, 07:59:38 PM »
Hi everyone,

first of all let me wish you all the best in the 2021 year and please join me to welcome the very first build of this year ready for beta testing - 21.1.2443 (build 21.1.5889).

What is new
  • Multi-detection fix: If you stumbled upon more detections at once, we wouldn't show each one in separate alert window anymore. Alert dialogs will be grouped into one, so there is no pop-up overload. Items are grouped by shield. (This applies to auto-mode, in Ask mode, we still show it one by one)
  • New categories and description: Our detections are now grouped in various categories of threats and each alert dialog contains a short description of corresponding category (you can find this in Details section). This will also enable us to continuously turn on PUP (potentially unwanted programs) detections ON by default for our users.
  • AlertID: We have placed a small numeric identifier in the footer of the detection dialog, so we can easily search the particular detection in our database and identify it based on the screenshot alone. We are often presented with snapshots from our users but up until now these screens didn't contain sufficient information.

What was fixed
  • not correct information in cyber capture detection dialog
  • detections by identity protection on drivers with custom label
  • missing focus (on top visibility) for identity protection dialogs
  • internet connection satus in firewall details was not always properly displayed
  • shell extension (scan in explorer) does not scan all files the link (.lnk) files are pointing to
  • detection dialogs and toasters when higher DPI (dots per inch) is used (screen resolution settings)
  • incorrect license/subscription details/update shown when there is a change

Known issues
  • possible BSOD (blue screen of death) due to problems in identity protection driver (internally catched just once on one machine during a month, will fix it in next BETA)

Thanks for screenshots, but please next time use English GUI if you want to show something to us.

Well since Asyn is German, using the that is hardly likely.

Plus all of the important new bits, which Asyn has highlighted, are actually in English, presumably they have yet to be translated As are some other parts of the UI.

Whilst he could add English to the Avast languages of course you too could add a language ;)

Whilst other elements are in German the Avast UI placement is the same, so it isn't going to be rocket science to find/see where these new elements are.

I've done some extensive testing and as i have already reported in slack, compatibility with the jaws screen reader is broken, however, no other issues in this beta so far.

You're welcome. Everything else has been (thankfully) already outlined/explained by Dave. :)

Still have following memory leak since 20.7 ...

Hi,
I found the the source of the problem, is the wpad.dat file used to auto define the proxy (or no proxy).

Sorry for delay.
Version 20.8.5684.602  not solved my situation.  Same behavior, soon I connect network cable Avsta start eating all memory.
It happens on some networks, not on others.  Or start after some time.
My network are the culprit? Why special have on these networks?

My test procedure is this:
Disable swap/paging on window, avoid system to use paging, a avast just eat all ram and killed by the kernel (I think).
Start computer with network cable disconnected (no wifi).
Open taskmanager, and Avast GUI.
Connect network cable and watch rise of memory usage by Avast.

If have some thing on my network causing the Avast memory issue, what can be?
My firewall is a linux machine, very simple, just for NAT, no complex packet filtering, multi internet access and Squid proxy (all most disabled).
I drop all forwarding from offending host. No change.
Dropped all input to firewall. NOW, avast no eating memory.
I opened port 80, and Avast start eating memory again.  What Avast accessing? Check the webserver log.
Avast getting the wpad file for proxy definition on this network. Renamed wpad.dat file, and try again.
Whitout wpad, no problem, avast try to get file, get a 404 and nothing happens.

Code: [Select]
The log on webserver (lighttpd 1.4.19):
10.0.103.91 wpad - [09/Oct/2020:09:36:43 -0300] "GET /wpad.dat HTTP/1.1" 200 94 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/72.3.3626.1895 Safari/537.36 Avastium (20.8.2432)"

wpad.dat content:

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
         return "DIRECT";
}

I hope this information helps to solve the problem.

Tanks, Paulino.

I confirm, it comes from the proxy !

Disabling the option "Automatically detect settings" of proxy under Windows, will no more cause the memory leak.
Activating it again, and Avast eats again all memory ...
