a few questions about Avast! 4 Pro
« on: November 17, 2006, 07:31:21 PM »
Can you answer the following questions concerning Avast! 4 Professional:

- offers offline (no internet access) virus definition updates?

- offers offline (no internet access) subscription renewal?

- How are exceptions handled?  (Is it scriptable or can it be done via configuration file?  It is preferable to avoid manual exception setup)

- Can installation be scripted for imaging and deployment purposes?

1. avast! VPS Update - Manual Download, save to USB/CD and copy to off-line system and update.
2. I guess if you use one of the local resellers rather than the on-line servises that may be possible.
3. Sorry I can't answer that one.
4. There is a silent installation available I believe.

However, you would probably be best to contact sales@avast.com directly.

Yes (in the sense that you download an executable from the Internet, transport it to the target machine in any way you like, and start it there to update the definitions).

- offers offline (no internet access) subscription renewal?

No, in my opinion - at least under ordinary circumstances (if you purchased thousands of licenses, it might be doable somehow... but don't take my word for granted here). Or, maybe some of the resellers might offer something like that.

- How are exceptions handled?  (Is it scriptable or can it be done via configuration file?  It is preferable to avoid manual exception setup)

What exactly do you mean by "exceptions"?

- Can installation be scripted for imaging and deployment purposes?

Yes, it's possible to create so called "silent installation" with specified options. Or, you can use managed clients together with ADNM - deploy the program remotely.

with the product we're currently using, we have to go in and manually add website URL's and files on the machine which are safe but trigger false alarms, which we refer to as "exceptions".   Is it possible to auto-populate such lists of benign sites and files?

Well... the lists are on the <avast>\Data\avast4.db file... I think it is included on the 'Silent' installation (avast Pro version). Maybe on ADNM you can set this on the Computer Catalog settings.
