Avast! Home reports an RPC error on Windows XP startup

I'm getting an error on Avast! Home when Windows is starting up.
It slows down the computer for a while, and then it returns to normal.
It gives me a link on Avast website that says something about a red circle, but the link didn't work...

How do I correct this problem??

I think a bit more info is needed, here.
How do you know you've got an error? Text please, or an error number. What link, and can you post it? Link on, or to Avast website?
Finish the sentence that goes "work..."

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- Which OS are you using? Is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Which actions have you taken to try solving the problem?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?

I'm using Win XP Pro, with Avast4 Home, latest version and vps...
I don't have any other antivirus software nor firewall.

The error shows while Windows is showing icons in the taskbar, but after a while it continues to show icons regularly, and Avast returns to normal.

RPC errors are generally related to old antivirus that left trash behind...

Acutally, you will find that the services are not running for Avast. It has nothing to do with RPC or other windows services would be failing. Are other programs failing or is it just Avast? Much of the other talk is a cop out. Manually start the services, there are four Avast services, and it will run temporarily. It will fail again. This is a known issue to users. There is no fix for this at this time.

How are set your avast! services?
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

I suppose you have to have four avast! services:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)

The two first of them should be Automatic loaded and the two last Manually loaded.
