There have been rumors for some time, that MS would take a stance on their intellectual properties rights being violated by Linux. It appears that the first shot has been fired.

Interesting article. Thanks for the link.

Hi OrangeCrate,

Yea, first linux was n't a threat, then linux was some sort of virus. Now when it seems to threaten their schemes, it has to be taken out. How, well to play the liability fiddle, scaring and fear-mongering about patents and the liability in court (big firms interests). It is no longer who made the patents and technology? But who bought it up, and so has a legal claim there now. M$ is about monopoly games, and it always has been into that. Seen that film about the pirates of Silicon Valley? What more should you know? It is all cristal clear to me.

Hi OrangeCrate,
...Seen that film about the pirates of Silicon Valley?...
polonus

Sure did.

From another thread, I mentioned I was waiting for a new box from HP. Just got here. As soon as I have the time, and since the only programs I really use anymore are Firefox, Thunderbird, and OOo, I'll be installing the latest version of Ubuntu, and away we go.

MS is tightening the screws, and rightfully so I suppose, if their patents and technology are being infringed on, but to me, it's just a reincarnation of the muscle shown by them in the Netscape/IE browser wars.

The authentication process with Windows, the kill switches built into Vista, and the aggressive stance they're beginning to take with Linux, right or wrong (let the lawsuits begin), is the future direction of Microsoft, I guess...

Read here:

Specifically under:

"patents and legal concerns"

Thanks orangecrate :)

You're welcome, happy to help.

I notice you're dual booting Windows and Kubuntu. I assume you're running Windows programs where there are no open source alternatives, or is that just a personal preference?

My system is them same as Justin, Windows XP Professional SP2 and Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) dual boot  8)
The only program that I did not find a compatible (same features and performance) free alternative is Acronis Disk Director / Acronis True Image  8)

I have the disk for Dapper Drake (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS) sitting on my desk. The box I got is basic, with XP Home installed, and I loaded it up with RAM. No monitor, speakers, whistles, or bells.

I could probably be talked out of it, but I believe I'm going to go for a clean install of Dapper.

I use the computer for business primarily, and I have no interest in media stuff such pictures, music, etc. There are no MS programs that I use anymore. There are open source alternatives for everything.

Now I just have to wait for the planets to line up properly, and do the deed.

Update 11/25/06: On the advice of a couple of friends, I kept both operating systems. Everything is running fine.
