epnhte5d.dll Won't scan. I get an error.
« on: November 24, 2006, 03:37:49 AM »
I've noticed after every total system scan I do with Home 4.7, many files are not scanned. All of these belong to my two other spyware/ad-ware programs except one.
C:\WINDOWS\DriverCache\i386\driver.cab\epnhte5d.dll

Avast will not scan this file.
Any ideas as to exactly what this files is and what it does.
I Googled and all I came up with was a couple of references but not anything enlightening.

What happens if you start avast antivirus, click the buttom for 'selected area' scanning and scan this particular file from there?
Is there any other info on avast logs? Which is told on the scanning report?
Anyway, nothing that you should worry that much  8)

avast will also tell you why it couldn't be scanned in the listing (you may need to expand the column width to see all the text), password protected, in use, exclusion, etc.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than a few weeks or so), skins you don't uses, etc. this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.
