Settings for mail protection
« on: January 30, 2004, 01:39:58 AM »
Installed Avast for first time yesterday, and just spent an hour getting the mail protection to work. It would not work using the mail wizard, or by doing manual setup using the recommended settings. I kept getting error messages, and could not send or receive.

I was using the recommended logon format for the mail address (john.smith#mail.isp.com). Then, in desperation, I tried the format I used to use with another mail protection program:
mail.isp.com:john.smith

This worked! Don't know why, maybe someone else can explain. I certainly haven't seen this recommended anywhere else in these forums or in the help files.

If this has been covered before, or I am repeating well-known information, then apologies. But I couldn't find any similar post in these forums, and I thought this might help others having difficulty with mail protection.

Are the server names replaced by 127.0.0.1? Don't you have another listening application on port 25? (your "another mail protection program")
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

Yes, the server names are replaced by localhost.

No, there's no other listening app on port 25 - I uninstalled the other mail protection program before installing Avast.
