Problem with On-Access Protection
« on: November 01, 2006, 07:50:05 AM »
Hi all, I'm a new user of Avast!  I really liked the constant and small sized updates.  Anyway, lately I've been experiencing trouble with the On-Access Protection.  I doesn't work!  When I boot my computer the system tray icon with the letter A has this red marker thing saying that this feature is disabled.  Even if I try to enable it it doesn't work.  I click the Start On-Access Protection and nothing happens.  I reboot my PC again hoping that it will work but it still doesn't.

I think it may have been a registration key thing as I have experienced this before I registered.  I also had busted CMOS battery (which I now fixed) then so I had to change the date a lot before.  But now when I replaced the battery the On-Access Protection doesn't seem to work.  Can anyone help me with this?  Oh and yeah, I'm using Windows 98.

Please check the status of avast services in Control Panel - Administration (if this is true for Win98) :)

Jaql, do you have any other antivirus in your computer? Did you have in the past?
Can you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing. If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Please check the status of avast services in Control Panel - Administration (if this is true for Win98) :)
It does not exist on Windows 98.

I had AVG free before.  I uninstalled it before installing avast.  Repair didn't work so I did the uninstall/boot/install/boot suggestion.  At first it worked but the next day I opened my computer and the red marker thing was there yet again.  Question, does the avast program disable the On-Access protection if the virus database is not updated?

No,avast will run with an outdated vps.

The last time I uninstalled AVG on a computor, I checked their forum for a tool or uninstall instructions. They had one, but I can't remember if it was a tool or manual instructions. Check it out, it might be worth you time.

AVG was completely out of my system before I installed Avast.  Is there some sort of log that I can provide people so they can check whatever is the problem with my PC or my copy of avast?  I'm going to download a fresh installer and try installing avast again.  I'll post results asap.

Sorry I'm a total noob how do you get the logs?  And I actually discovered a fun fact.  When I refresh the desktop after the first system tray item shows itself the on-access protection works!  And if I reboot and leave my PC to finish starting everything before I  do anything (e.g. move the mouse) the on-access protection is once again disabled.  This is truly weird.

I just started having the exact same problem.

Edit: I fixed it. I dont know if it will stay fixed after a reboot, though. I did:

My Computer/RightClick/Manage/Services and Applications/Services/Click on avast! antivirus/hit Start.

The on access protection should start =)

Ok... but it should start automatically and shouldn't be disabled after that...

I don't think win98 has that kind of option.  Anyway, everything is okay now (I'm just getting used to the refresh after 1st system tray icon).  It's working if I do that.  Thanks for all the replies.

Guys, can anyone check this log?  The On-Access Protection is still driving me nuts here.  I thought I could endure the constant refresh-ing but I was wrong.
