And one more simple thing to try.

Please kill any running avast.setup's, then double click the "avast iAVS4 Control Service" in the Services applet of Administrative Tools (in Control Panel), and on the Log On tab, change it to log on to Local System account, AND enable the service to interact with desktop.

Then retry the manual update.

If that doesn't help, try doing the same thing with the iAVS Control Service stoped altogether.

Geez I'd really love to know what's going on there... :-\

Thanks

I will give your suggestions a try after I resolve a different problem that is preventing users from accessing a business critical web-based application.

Hopefully, the two issues are not related.

I tried your suggestions and and launched a manual update request.  After a lengthy period of no apparent activity I noticed that the avast.setup task was still running.  I killed that process and the resulting entry in the Antivirus event log as shown in the attached screen capture.

It must be failing with an error.

Please again, kill all avast.setup's, and STOP the avast iAVS4 Control Service.

Then invoke the update. This time, you should see a progress on the screen. And, eventually - an error message.

Thanks

Based upon an earlier comment you made, will running these commands from a remote connection to the server work, and will I be able to see the Avast update activity?

Only if you stop that service.
If the service is running, the updates will be executed in context of that service, and unfortunately you won't be able see its UI (because non-LocalSystem services can't access the desktop by design in Windows).

There were no avast.setup processes running, but I did stop the Avast! iAVS4 Control Service and ran the manual update.

In the progress window it showed that it was downloading file: Servers.def.stamp, followed by several attempts to download file: servers.def.  After each attempt an error would flash up in the box stating theat it "Can not connect to the server"

An error box finally came up stating that "Server www.asw.cz (195.70.130.34:80) is down.  It had an accompaning log file and I have attached the text version of that file.

hi burl,

errors in log mean the connection was not possible - possibly misconfigured firewall/proxy.

OTOH, the 'hang up' should not occur anyway... We'll investigate, but such a problem is usually unrepeatable here  >:(

Next time, please, send us the file setup.log from avast4\setup directory, it's a bit more verbose. Thanks.

I have split the Setup.log file into three parts to stay under the 150 Kb. attachment limit. This post has part #1 with parts 2 & 3 to follow.

Hi,

you log is long but says the only thing - avast updater is not able to contact our servers. You should play a bit with proxy/firewall settings.

Is it SBS Standard or Premium? I.e. do you use its ISA Server? Does the computer have two NICs?

SBS Premium with ISA and SQL.  Yes, I have two NIC's and a DSL modem that hase some firewall capabilities as well.

Another possible important note is that Internet Explorer is using Enhanced Security.
