Unable to login as administrator or connection error
« on: December 07, 2006, 11:07:06 PM »
OK, this is killing me.  This error has come up before as I see it elsewhere in the forum.  However, I must be lucky enough to have a slightly more unique scenario.

I've been fighting with this for a while.  Here's a little history/background info.
1: Initial problem was the ADNM app was very slow when trying to load objects in the right pane and all PCs were showing up with a black icon.
2: Reloaded the ADNM software but still no joy.
3: Reloaded WinXP and then loaded the ADNM app...still no joy.
4: Removed it from that PC and loaded it onto another one...still no joy.
5: After you 1st load the app, you can log into it.
6: Change the default password or not, you still won't get back into the ADNM software after you've closed it.
7: Even after you 1st load it, it's still sluggish and times out while trying to load some of the other screens.
8: Knowing I might not be able to get back in under the Administrator account, I made a new one (Admin) and I still couldn't get into it with that login either.

There's nothing on the PC other than Windows XP and the ADNM app.  This is killing me so if anyone knows anything, please enlighten me before I go on a shooting rampage.  >:(

Is the "avast! Management Server" service running? If not, can it be started manually?

Yes, it's running.  Another note...before ADNM was installed the system was snappy!  Now, it's very sluggish.  CPU usage is above normal with readings of 5-10%.  Although that may seem low, these things normally run around 0-2%.  SQL seems to be one of the CPU hogs right now...and it's the SQL that come packaged with ADNM.

Is the evelated CPU load constant? Or comes in peaks?

Sure, it fluctuates but it's only by a couple percent.  I'd say it's fairly constant...

In this case, you might've met a problem that we identified in the current version of the AMS server software. If you wish, you can try the pre-release build of the next version (that should fix it).

Would you be interested?

I'm up for anything at this point - including crazy rituals with human sacrifices.  I'd try holy water but I don't think the PC would like that.

I sent you an email...

No need for holy water - let's try a holy patch instead ;-D

Please follow these instructions to install it:
(The whole thing shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes - no reboot
necessary)

1. stop (or kill, if stopping is impossible) the "Avast! Management Server"
service (avEngine.exe)
2. place the attached servers.def file to the <Management Tools>\setup
folder (overwrite existing)
3. delete files servers.def.lkg and servers.def.vpu in the same folder ( <
Management Tools>\setup - don't confuse with <AVAST>\setup )
4. go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> avast! Management Tools
(click Change/Remove)
5. in the list on the left, click "Update", and click "Next".
6. ADNM will now update your AMS to the fixed internal build (should be
presented as "4.7.571")
7. When complete, the updater will most likely restart the "avast!
Management Server" service. If not, you can do it yourself.

OK, 1st off, I didn't see "servers.def.lkg and servers.def.vpu" so they weren't deleted.  However, I was able to perform the update.  I did have to start the service manually.  As seen in the screen shot, the version was bumped up to Oct. 2006.  I was still unable to get in and the PC lagged terrible.  I was finally able to get back in after restarting the service - which was a feat in itself.  After I was in, it was still sluggish and I still couldn't load some of the panes.  As seen in the screen shot, it timed out while trying to view the catalog.  This timeout happens when trying to view most (if not all) of the panes.

This thing runs a lot smoother when the "avast! Management Server" service isn't running....no lag!

Got holy water!?  ???

It's been awhile...  Any more Ideas or should I reload this thing and don't do any Windows Updates?

OK.....  I guess I'll drop some more info in here.

I recently reloaded this PC for the 4th time. :o  It was a good time had by all!  Anyway, I've loaded the OS & installed ADNM.  I was worried as hell when I started seeing the list of clients show up in ADNM.  Not all of them showed up and some of them are having issues.  However, I've been able to log into the ADNM software several times and it hasn't bogged down the PC more than usual.  I let it run like that over Christmas.  Today, I turned on automatic updates and it pulled down the criticals.  It seems fine for now.  I'll let it alone for a few days and start on some of the other updates.  There may be an update that is messing with this AMS.  I'll post any findings.

Beyond MS-Updates, there's only Firefox 2 & a LogMeIn setup on here.  These are normally on this PC so I don't think these are screwing it up.
