Home AV Scan just disappears ??
« on: January 31, 2004, 06:02:19 PM »
Hello, i am a new user of Avast Home.
Registered and installed the key.
Nice program!
But.......... there is one problem.
When i start a complete system scan with scan
archive files ticked, the program starts scanning but
after 10 minutes or so it just "disappears" and exits....
I am using WinXP Professional.
Any ideas ? Cause without this functionality the program
is almost kind of usesless :-)

Cheers

Hi,

you did reboot after the installation ?

does this crash happen also if you  start Win in SafeMode (F8-Boot) ?
If not, try a full scan there first.. or try a full scan with Archive-scanning NOT enabled first

if all this doesn't work, you might have an existing virus on the pC which kills avast

try OnlineScanners from TrendMicro and/or RAV  then

Do you have all ServicePacks and critical Updates applied from Windows ?

eco,

Sounds like you could have the Blaster worm or variant which causes computer shutdown by creating a buffer overflow.

It is extremely hard for an antivirus to protect you from this, but a good firewall will do so.

Run Kaspersky online scanner to see if the Blaster worm is present.  If so, I believe that they have a free removal tool.

If you are not using a firewall, may I suggest freeware:
Spygate
ZoneAlarm

Any other questions, let me know.

Good luck

Thanx for the tips.
I did 2 things (stupid to change 2 things at once but hey :-)) )
1. I unchecked the "scan archive files"
2. Then the scan started and "hung" on the Hotmail Popper
directory. So I stopped Hotmail Popper on the fly and hey!
there the scan proceeded END ended after some hours.

I was doing a "thorough scan" and to my surprise 6 viri where
found in folders that PC CILLIN 2000 had scanned but not
detected viri in!!! Geez!!!
So that is one good point for AVaS!
I feel better protected now!

As we speak i am running a scan with Archivefile scanning on.
And it still runs!

Hope it keeps this way, and i will try a third scan with Hotmail Popper active.

Thanx so far!

eco,

Would you do me a favor if you can?
Post the names of the viri that PCillan did not pick up.

This helps others users who may develop similar problems and also adds to our forum database.

Glad everything turned out ok.  If not, come back.

That is exactly my problem!
It finishes its thorough scan when i uncheck the
"scan archives" option....

Maybe the programmes can say a word here ?

Thanx

HI,

I've got the same problem. As far as I can remember I've tried all combinations of checking/unchecking various options. The scan starts out fine and suddenly the scanner disappears. I don't know if the complete scan has ever come to an end, but since a full scan takes a looooong time( 2 * 120GB) disk, I've given up on that account.
I've done 2 complete online virus checks and no viruses are found. My PC is also trojan free.
It doesn't really bother me but perhaps my 2 cents worth could help you solve the problem.

P4 2.67MHs
Win Xp Pro - US
1 GB DDR2700 RAM
2 * 120 GB disks, 1 ATA and 1 SATA
Hightech Excalibur Radeon 9600Pro - 128MB
