I keep looseing my avast try Icon and when i restore it it appears OK but when I shut my computer down and restart it it is gone again. Can any one tell me what is wrong? Avast is set up to show a tray Icon on my computer.

Repair your avast installation through Control Panel or

Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder or

Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Are you by any chance using SpySweeper or any other startup monitor?

Yes I am using SPYWAREfighter. I tried to reinstall it with ashdisp and it reinstals it but it will not stay after I shut down. I don't know anything about the Registry so I leave it alone.

Then I suggest you have a look in your spywarefighter and see if there is a setting to monitor startup entries and ensure it doesn't block ashDisp.exe.

Looks like it is time to uninstall and reinstall I have tried every thing you told me and it still will not work. Tried to put in my startup folder and found out I didn't know how.

An uninstall and reinstall will have no effect if the reason for the deletion of the avast icon is another security based program.

Navigate to your startup folder, C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Start Menu\Programs\Startup once there, right click in the right hand window, from the menu, select New, Shortcut see image. From the new window click Browse and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe file and select it and click OK, Next, name the shortcut and your done.
