Ok Thanks. I was looking at the on access page, didn't see it , so thought maybe something new.

It's always been in resident tasks. Thought home had it also.

Update: the build number is now 4.7.932. The 932 build brings a couple of fixes (especially on Vista) as well as a new language module - Catalan.

I installed the previous beta (925) and now this one (932) and, on my pc anyway, the memory usage is higher than with the last official release.  The usage for the official release was:

ashDisp.exe - 2720
ashMai.exe - 1628
ashServ.exe - 6500
ashWebSv.exe - 15624
ashUpdSv.exe - 208
 TOTAL............26680

My usage with 925 was:

ashDisp.exe - 1716
ashMai.exe - 2608
ashServ.exe - 12840
ashWebSv.exe - 17964
ashUpdSv.exe - 252
  TOTAL...........35380

After 15 minutes with 932 utilization is:

ashDisp.exe - 4604
ashMai.exe - 2280
ashServ.exe - 14180
ashWebSv.exe - 5912
ashUpdSv.exe - 228
  TOTAL...........27204

It is looking better right now but still not as good as the last official release.  I'll leave it running overnight and check again tomorrow.

I'd put it this way - because of internal changes, the real memory usage is significantly lower than in the previous official release (I can really assure you of that).
The numbers you see in Task Manager have little connection to reality (i.e. they don't reflect the real memory usage and there's no point in comparing them).

For correct memory usage you have to enable VM Size column in Processes list (Task Manager).
Open Task manager, select Processes tab, click View and select Select Columns... in dropdown menu.
New column will appear next to the Memory usage one. Now check the VM Size column and tell us again how much is it using.
Vlk mentioned this some time ago in (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=6494.msg50215#msg50215) to explain the diference in memory usage and VM size.
In most cases, both values are very different.

VM Size column is slightly better, but not even this would show you that the memory consumption has lowered... I'm afraid you'll have to believe us ;)
Users with older machines (i.e. with less RAM installed) may notice that the machine is more responsive with the new version (less swapping).

Same thing here, but machine seems to work faster.

But I'm not sure about believing it.

Well if you can't take the word of one of the development team I don't know how you can believe more complex issues. I have rarely worried about RAM use from the days I left win9X behind, XP is much better at managing it and RAM is there to be used. avast is far lighter than many other AVs which is shown in the fact that it still supports and can run on the likes of win95 with low RAM installed and that is much more troubled with system resources.

I have been using avast for quite some time now and I see the developments and improvements and on each and every program update the team have tried to further tweak and optimise the program, reducing RAM use and speeding boot and scans, etc. That is their goal and unfortunately windows Task Manager really isn't that good at displaying RAM used you only have to look at the number of memory columns you can look at. There are probably other more accurate RAM use tools out there.
