I just autodownloaded the update to Avast.  I currently have version 4.7.936 installed on a Vista x64 host with 2 gig ram and AMD 2.6 x2.  After reboot none of programs such as IE, Quicken, Outlook, windows explorer, cmd prompt will start.  Keep receiving error:  Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.  If I stop the Standard Shield Provider everything works.

under win98, i tried to install beta, as i always do, and i couldn't because the update program froze..... i had to manually kill the avast01 process.... :P

since then, i can't update mit viral definition anymore, the avast01 process runs when i boot  and  don't know what to do for it not to begin at windows start ..... i just can't update (even normal updates...) please help !

Same here. Trouble with Win98. CPU remains at 100 % with normal actualization. Even happened with betas 4.7.925 and 4.7.932 using 4.7.892 version. Couldn´t install the betas before too.

Installing new 4.7.936 after uninstall and reboot old version... Freeze in VPS actualization. CPU use at 100% again. Could not complete installation. Uninstalled it.

Installed new 4.7.936 in security mode. Installation complete, reboot. Tried manually actualize avast!, again VPS module download with CPU use at 100%. The actualization takes AGES to complete, i´m making it now. I will post when (i hope) it finishes.

i confirm, it's not frozen : it's sooooo slooooooww !!!! i saw it by using "avast update" in the "add/remove" section of windows..... it takes ages to dowload the files   (and finally never ends) ..... can you try to fix it ? thx ;)

i autodownloaded and installed the newest version, and now ie7, nero, and several other programs take at least 90 sec to boot! this occurred upon the reboot right after installing, seems to be an issue only when starting the programs, they seem to run fine once started.

i am running windows xp sp2. turning off the standard shield doesn't fix it, will try re booting with all the on access providers off.  am i the only one with this prob??

So, even if you stop the whole on-access protection, it doesn't help?
That would be rather strange (if the problem was in avast!)... besides, I think there are quite a few users running XP SP2 & IE7, for example.

Let us know your findings, please. Thanks.

I have XP SP2 on my computers (AMD and P4), and also IE7 and Nero, all is working fine here with the latest version. No problem at all with Nero, IE7, and other program I have checked.

just tried rebooting with all the providers turned off and still ie7 is taking forever to boot.  this is very frustrating, is there any way to re-install the previous version? (other than going through the process of restoring my drive from a backup image?) the machine was running great till i did this update, i recently did a complete reinstall of windows so there aren't many programs on it.

What if you uninstall avast! - does that help?

I just updated to the new avast... (4.7.936).  All went well with the update from the tray icon.  This is on my new computer that replaced my old Win98 machine.  It's a Dell Dimension, WinXP Media Ctr - SP2, Intel Duo core, 2.8 ghz. 1 gig ram, 230 gig HDD.

Running a full standard scan (only 10.2 gig files populated) took 9:49 mins (archived files scan disabled).  Full scan with older ver of avast took 10:20 mins, so it is a bit faster.

Way to go Alwil team!  :)

BTW, I use IE-7.  No slowdown seen when launching.

I also have had major problems with this last update, running Vista x64 Ultimate rtm. The only way I could recover my system was to boot into safe mode and uninstall Avast, after that all was normal.

I run XP Home w/sp2 and have Avast Pro

The only problem I seem to be having with this last update, (I updated from the tray icon this morning) is that I cant seem to password protect my program. I am getting the same error as the others, though my OS is in a different language, so posting the error here as it is worded would seem redundant or useless... Later today I will probably downgrade back to the old version at least until this issue is resolved. What a huge pain in the backside, yuck!

I do not use IE7, rather I use Firefox...

So far no services, or anything seem to be having any trouble, though some of the scanners took a little longer to activate. (The Avast scanners...) Only fine came online initially, then the two other active ones pop up a few moments later. The 8th scanner is not active as I do not use Outlook...

I use Kerio-Sunbelt firewall, if that is somehow relevant...
