I was tempted to point out all the good things that happened in the off-topic forum. All the friendships that where made but,
since it will only fall on deaf ears, why bother.

^,

Agreed. With the exception of a couple of rabble rousers that should have been "plonked", the Off Topic forum was a lot of fun.

I still think that Mozilla's got it right with the "After Dark" portion of their forum. You need at least 20 (?) posts to even know it's there. It doesn't show in the menu of forums unless you're signed in, and have the 20+ posts. Pretty cool.

If I'm not wrong, most of the ramblers had more than 20 posts when they spammed Pavel with their feuds which started in offtopic forum.

You're right. It's been a long time, I forgot about the Pavel issue.

Point well made. I'll let my comments in both posts on this thread stand on their own merit, but that will be it on this topic from me.

First, I'm surprised that you all haven't recognized that you are being "baited" by Jason.b.c in this thread...

BEING BAITED...???

What are you talking about...???

Do you think i am trying to pull something here..?  WTF.?

One of the problems on the Off-topic forum was the moderators flaming each other. Maybe if we had a couple of credible folks who agreed not to post on the off-topic forum volunteer to be moderators it would help.

I am not pointing any fingers here, I am just trying to help get the off-topic forum (again) up and running to help us all. It is obvious many of us miss posting with our friends.

^^,

Jason.b.c., here's the sum total of your posts in this thread...

"Is the off topic section forgoten about..?"

"This makes absolutely no sence..!"

"What was this link suppose to tell me...?"

"I don't understand why the off topic section was closed , What happened anyway and why even have it if it's not going to be used..??"

"But isn't that what moderators are for..?  To remove offensive post's..."

"BEING BAITED... ???"

"What are you talking about... ???"

"Do you think i am trying to pull something here..?  WTF.?"

To answer your last question, I don't know, are you? If I've misread your "concern" about why the Off Topic forum was closed, my sincere apologies.

A simple solution is to remove the three forum members from the moderators position and get someone from Alwil to step into their shoes.  :)

Hi ye all,

This was precisely what made the off-topic go "bunkers". Endless discussions that went round and round, serving no end. And what bob3160 says is right, that good friendships were made there, but it also turned people away from the forum, and that was a sorry thing to experience. I remember some threads closed over our heads, that started out as a genuine discussion (e.g. the Arovax discussion - I have it on my computer now, but was rather critical about it in the beginning), and then in the heated debate the whole thread had to be taken out. Some forum members even started to emigrate "virtually speaking". Learned a lot that way. Let us not restart these items!

I saw a lot of people grow here into real advanced malware fighters, even youngsters in China where I could ignite a bit of the real true malware fighting spirit, and the graduation of essexboy for instance who took the bootcamp of a malware fighting forum's academy to be able to help malware victims more effectively. I myself could help out a bit in browser security, and even some of security coding goes into the FF 3.0 Minefield trunk version. So I owe an awful lot to the inspiring Avast product and the mods that inspired me to do all this. Learned to be an effective searcher for cleansing routines also.
So let us focus on the things that are really important, OK?

Unfortunately, we've had more of that happen in this section of the forum during the last 6 month,
that we had during the whole life cycle of the off-topic forum.

I was not a forum member at the time the Off Topic problems were occurring so I don't know the details.  I would just comment that complaining to the moderator is not the same as spamming.  But if someone was sending Pavel Viagra ads, well, that's a different story.

We all read different things into a person's posts.  I, for one, took your posts as genuine curiosity.

Most of those have been discussions that should have found a home in an Off Topic forum but no longer can.  That's exactly why I'm in favor of re-opening the Off Topic.

I honestly don't think I would participate in the OT that much. I'm not much into chit chat.  But I would like the General Forum to be a little more focused while still recognizing that since we are all human beings jokes will be told, current events will discussed, graphics will be posted and laughed at, etc.  Resurrecting the OT could accomplish that.

Sorry, one last comment to Bob since we can't send PMs...

Bob, I don't remember anymore why I knew that there was a problem with email and/or PM complaints to avast staff regarding the Off Topic forum. I did some searching here yesterday to see if I could find the comment(s), but didn't find anything, so it must have been something someone said in a PM.

Anyway, if I were receiving numerous complaints on a pretty regular basis, I'd probably pull the plug on the problem forum too. Whether "spam" is the correct word to describe it, is a choice based on the opinion of the person receiving the emails and PMs, so I'm not questioning kubecj's terminology.

Though I'm empathetic to other's views, personally, I think the Off Topic reinstatement is a dead issue, so I for one, am going to leave it alone, as I indicated in my response to kubecj.

This topic needs to be closed as it has been talked about enough in the past and it has been talked about more than enough now.

None of us users own this forum but it was users who caused the Off-Yopic section to be closed. There is nothing users can do to reopen the OT section. Let it go and move on with life.
