i found the following article in the MS-KB

as a work around it directs...

"To work around this problem, turn off AVAPI transport scanning on the Exchange computer."

How do we turn this off, and what are the disadvantages?

Sorry I must have missed your previous post.

To disable transport scanning, double click the avast icon, scroll to Exchange 2000/2003, double-click its icon (or press the Customize button) and uncheck the transport scanning box.

By turning this off, you will disable scanning of messsages that do not end up in mailboxes on your server. That is, the messages for which your server is not the final destination (acts as a "transport" server).

Thanks
