Virus and Chest Not Working
« on: January 23, 2007, 07:52:55 AM »
I would really appreciate some help.  My computer has been offline after moving and needing to bring it in for repair.  When I got it back, the Avast icons are not showing up in my toolbar and the Resident protection does not seem to be working.

I did not realize this.  I started a scan and was advised that my computer was infected with Adware....win32Adware-gen to be exact.  The advise was to move it to the Chest.  However, when I tried, I was advised that the chest was not working....Program cannot use Chest client: (null)
--->Description: Virus chest server is not running. RPC communication failed.

I don't know how to resolve any of this and would appreciate any help I can get.  I am not particularly computer savvy.

Thanks,
Sandy

Try to do a repair of avast. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose "Repair" in the popup window. You must be on-line while repairing.

RPC communication failed.
Can you try to repair your installation as Spyros said?
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Did you have in the past? Which one?
Do you use a firewall? Which one?

Also, take a look into Administrative Tools > Services
and see how the four avast services are set to start (automatically or manual).
