Download Speed SERIOUSLY Affected!!
« on: January 14, 2007, 03:07:44 PM »
After battling with COMCAST about not getting the speed I should have, the end result is that AVAST/HOME appears to be the culprit.

If I run a Speedtest with AVAST/HOME active I get about 1/3 of my 6 meg download speed.

If I turn off AVAST/HOME I get about 6 meg download speed.

I have all 7 providers active ...

Windows 2000PRO

All AVAST at current level!

Would anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Of course, scanning takes resources and the download speed will reduce.
If you want to use only the Standard Shield at High sensitivity, disable WebShield (your http traffic won't be scanned, although the files saved in the HDD will be caught by the Standard Shield).
If you prefer, you can use Standard Shield at Normal sensitivity, disable scanning of open/create/modify files and let WebShield enabled.
I'd rather the second option  8)

I can understand that, but to lose 2/3 of your speed?? Is THAT to be expected?

Do I leave the Email option activated?

It certainly doesn't look normal.
What is your machine (CPU speed)?

Quite fast, you shouldn't notice any bigger slowdown...
Does the avast! tray icon spin when you measure your speed?
If you stop avast! resident providers one by one, is there any one in particular that affects the speed?

Sure... the problem most probably is on WebShield and not on email provider.
Well, the problem could be elsewhere... Is there any other security program installed in your computer?

Please, activate logging in WebShield:
1. Edit <avast>\data\avast4.ini file
2. Find the section [WebScanner]
3. Add the line:
    EnableLogging=1
4. Restart Web Shield in XP (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
5. Browse (trying to access some webpages, specially the ones that bring trouble, etc.)

The log file are <avast>\data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek (at) asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.

No argument there  :)

One spin when it starts and one spin when it finishes

I did not stop them one by one but rather stopped ALL and restarted them 1x1
IM Shield did not affect speed
Internet EMail did not affect speed
Network Shield did not affect speed
P2P   DID affect speed

Did not go further

If u think stopping them 1x1 would be better, let me know...

I will do this again later to see if this is all repeatable...

Done... Email sent with the LOG file attached... the .WS file was 0 bytes...

Sorry but 0 bytes means no log, no info... probably useless...

Oh, sorry. Then maybe Lukas (the one you've sent the email) could probably help IF the problem is on WebShield.

The file was EMAILED to you several days ago... with no response, not even an acknowledgement that you received it...

An update would be appreciated!!!!!!!
