how to use avast from Windows Recovery console
« on: January 15, 2007, 03:00:35 PM »
Having problems rebooting and googling shows that the problem may be a boot virus. Since all these help sites, including Micrsoft suggest checking for viruses. I could not help to ask the question , Yes but how does one do this since one can not boot into the program? Seems useless advice to me to say check for viruses if one has a boot virus and can not log in.
So, in my case all I can access is the Recovery console and from there I noticed I could access the individual folders including where AVast resides.
So Can I run it from there? and how do I do so?

thank you

avast can't be run at Windows Recovery Console environment.
You may attach this HDD in another computer an scan it from there.
No other antivirus either...

Sorry... wasn't avast enabled when you've caught that virus?
Maybe it's a rootkit (hidden virus) and you should do a full scanning.

Sorry the short answer is no avast needs windows to be running with several of its services in order to be able to run. So as far as I'm aware it can't be run from the recovery console.

Are you able to boot into safe mode, you didn't specifically mention if you had tried that ?

avast does have the Bart CD which is a corporate option for cleaning without windows, more expensive but you may qualify for the trial.
