Welcome to the forums.

No, not without a third party program such as Stunnel. A search of this forum for stunnel will give you links and info on how to set up stunnel.

First of all, it's not possible because Gmail uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections. Avast mail scanner doesn't support SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections. But take a look here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=10428.0 to see how to set up secure email with avast!.

Since SSL/TLS e-mail is encrypted and decrypted in the client, external virus scanners (including avast!) can't read or scan it.
The solution is to pass e-mail in and out un-encrypted from your client (Outlook Express, Thunderbird, ...) to a proxy program (Stunnel) that does the actual ssl or tls encryption/decryption of the pop3/smtp e-mail and communicates directly with the ISP server on the appropriate ports. Another drivers (OpenSSL) are need as a library of encryption/decryption routines. Stunnel now comes as an installer which installs Open SSL and Stunnel so now you just have to download the installer version from here http://www.stunnel.org/download/binaries.html
The best things in life are free.

If you were using MS Outpost it would be able to do that as there is a plug-in, which effectively has the avast email scanner inside Outpost. I believe the same is true for 'The Bat' email client, but the Internet Mail scanner operates independent (outside) the email program and you need a third party interface as Oldman and Tech mention.

It would probably be possible to build a plug-in for other emails and that would mean a massive amount of programming effort and which one would you support, there are always new and modified email clients coming out. With the Internet Mail provider, these new and modified email clients, provided they conform to the email protocols, should be able to use the Internet Mail provider.

Just a lot ;D

Spending too much time at the Outpost forum watching feedback/problems with the latest outpost update before I consider updating ;D
