PUSH update

How effective is the PUSH update of Avast?  Is it happening on a real-time? Like when there is a virus update from Avast, their server will connect to my PC where Avast Pro is installed and update my software with the latest patches?  

Or.. is it same like to other software, my computer has to connect time to time to check for any new updates?

As far I know:

1) you must be connected to Internet (avast! Push does not dial itself).

2) you must receive the avast! Push email warning... While scanning this specific email, the update proccess will be started. So, you must have your email program set to verify emails with some frequency.
