What kind of file?  Is that an Avast error message?

downloaded avast, when it finished i clicked on the icon on desktop,it started throwing files from one folder to the other then stopped and error message read                      error 1006(000003EE) opening self-extract archive     have not even got to use antivirus program yet.    thankyou for answering

Oh okay, it sounds like you had a bad downloaded avast install file.  That happens some times.  Try downloading it again and retry your install.

Also do a clean install by rebooting your machine before running the install file.

Thread is a group or joint of related posts into the forum, I mean, each 'subject' discussed is a thread, for instance you started this thread called 'Error message'.

To 'subscribe' to a thread, when you post click the option 'Notify of replies' bellow the box for writting. You will receive a email message alerting you that anybody else posted into that thread.

I am experiencing the same difficulty and have followed the instructions given multiple times, with no luck.  I am using Win Me and have uninstalled previous virus protection. Any ideas?

What was the previous virus software that you uninstalled.  Norton seems to not totally uninstall.  At least, that is a common factor on this board with Norton being uninstalled and then Avast being installed.

Did you try to delete all your temporary files and try to download and save the file again?
