yeah, i just ran into this Windows Advanced Firewall issue, Avast won't update itself... tried to add everything i could as an outbound exception but no go...
has this been fixed yet? i see no reason why Avast can't work with Vista/Windows 7 native firewall (considering its a very decent firewall)

Neither do we... avast works perfectly with Windows Vista firewall... maybe you mess any configuration (Advanced) and you're experiencing trouble. Can you update with Windows firewall off (disabled)?

yes, it updates fine when 'outbound' connections allowed (turned off), if i block all outbound connections but add all the exceptions i've seen on the boards it still doesn't work, parts of avasts update exes seem to freeze in task manager, until they timeout...

where is a list of exceptions i need to add to advanced firewall outbound protection? in order to get things to work properly, i saw somewhere that there are issues with avast.setup file and how its temporary being one cause of this type of issue, saw that when looking at a thread on the Vista Firewall Control app

help!

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable). This is a temporary file that just appears when an update (check) is about to launch, and disappears again afterwards.

Don't need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service). Although, ashServ.exe sends ping packets to find out if the Internet connection is alive. You can turn this off by checking the "My computer is permanently connected to the Internet" box in the avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) page.

i've added the following, no luck... when firewall with outbound protection is on (changed from allow to block) ... avast.setup and VisthUpd.exe hang in the task manager for awhile, then disappear, and not checking for an update

when outbound protection is changed from blocked to allow, all is fine... checking for update takes a second

any other ideas?

Vista Ultimate SP1 32bit

note, firewall functions just fine, every other program i've added from Media Player, IE to IM apps work just fine when rules are added for their respective components, i even have Windows Update working with outbound protection (block) on and i have no other protection software running atm other than Avast

i notice this in the log viewer
setifaceupdatepackages () has failed return code is 0x20000004.
dialog box returns failure connecting to server and hangs there retrying...

The Vista firewall isn't very friendly, perhaps you could try til tool to make life a little easier.

- Vista Firewall Control, check out this topic for some user friendly help for the Vista Firewall, Outbound protection, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30234.0

Windows Vista Advanced Firewall is friendly enough, as long as you know which components of a program to fully allow outbound connections, i can't figure Avast out :P i've tried that little app Vista Firewall Control previously, it does notify me when apps are blocked  and i add them (EnableAll) ... yet Avast still don't connect to the update server, further the app doesn't even look like its adding any outbound rules to the Advanced Firewall itself, no even when run under Admin...

when i had AVG previous to my install of Avast, it updated just fine when i added rules for it, either way... a component is not allowed somewhere, i added what was mentioned a few posts above...

does that little Vista Firewall Control app just stop any outgoing traffic, until you allow it within the app? because i have 'Outbound' connections blocked, under Vistas Advanced Firewall, and if rules aren't being added to both that app and the built in firewall, won't the connections still be stopped by Vista? i do not want to use the Firewall Control app to protect outbound connections....

explain...

edit: yeah i just read though the FAQ on that VFC website, its independent of the built-in Firewall, therefore useless to me and another third-party resource i don't need running on my system...

I would suggest running this tool to ensure all remnants of AVG are gone - AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

seems gone, the log file generated from that had basically removed nothing, because nothing cound be found out of the list of entrys and files it was looking for... i'm quite sure all of AVG is gone, this problem i'm having shouldn't have anything to do with AVG, as refused connections happen when i toggle Outbound as Blocked in Vistas firewall, even with said rules added for Avast

I don't know what else to try as I don't use vista so I'm not familiar with how the vista firewall works.

Vista Firewall Control Free is easy to use and makes the Vista firewall manageable for me.

Make sure that the 4 avast! services have inbound and outbound enabled.

I check each application as to why it wants outbound and deny it if I don't want it to but most of them it is just an update check so I find where in the application the update check is requested and if enabled then I permit outbound.

from what i can gather Vista Firewall Control, does not work with Vistas actual built-in firewall, it works as a sort of firewall on its own, ie) it won't work right if you have Outbound 'Blocked' under Advanced Firewall, Advanced Firewall has to remain on 'Allow' in order for Vista Firewall Control app to work... otherwise you've basically got two (2) outbound protective barriers in place :P one canceling out the other...

i don't want to use a third-party tool/app just for the sake of using Avast, i'd like to make Avast work with Vistas Advanced Built-In Firewall, as it should... Vista has been around for years, Windows 7 firewall functions in the same way :S

Well from what I gather it is just an interface to the vista firewall making it easier to configure it, it isn't a firewall in its own right. At just over a 1006KB download it is hardly going to be a firewall in its own right.

its a standalone app, not an interface to the Vista built-in Firewall
any other ideas anyone?
