unable to scan files and registries for problems
« on: February 17, 2007, 11:47:47 PM »
when Ifirst installed AVAST home edition I was able to scan all files and registry values. Now each and every day my list of unscanable files grow by 10 to 20> I'm now up to 321 files. Mostly they are files created by Lavasoft ( adaware se) wich makes sense but others are things like /sb recovery.ini /recovery.reg /Urgesetup.exe /MWSOEMON.EXE   All of these files are in archives is this a serious problem or am I worring for nothing. Can someone please explai if they can

You are worrying for nothing.

You don't mention 'why' they can't be scanned and avast tells you that, most likely these are password protected.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

A Google search using Scandoo produced these results for MWSOEMON.EXE ...

http://g.s.scandoo.com/search?hl=en&meta=on&q=MWSOEMON.EXE

It seems that this is MyWebSearch adware and can be gotten from various places/programs such as visiting/using popular screensavers, free buddy icons, smiley central, cursor mania, etc.
