Web Shield prevents all web browsing
« on: February 19, 2007, 01:37:02 PM »
I've had 4.7 installed and working fine for ages, but as of today Firefox tells me "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" for every page I try to access. If I turn the Web Shield provider of, all is well.

In the Avast! log file I see the Warning "Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004."

A Search on this Forum shows that a couple of people have had similar symptoms before, but I can't see any resolution described anywhere. Could it be that I (or maybe I can blame the wife) denied web access to an Avast! program recent? If so, how to I edit the list of denied programs to reverse that?

ADVthanksANCE.
Matt.

Reboot your system and see if that resolves the problem.

If not, try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

Thanks for the ideas, but I've already tried all that but it makes no difference. Still behaves exactly the same: with Avast! active, I can't load any web page; but when I stop Web Shield it works.

What's the next step?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entries for it and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

If no difference you are looking at a reinstall, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
It would probably be best to download the latest version of avast and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

I'm only using Windows Firewall, but whether it is turned on or off makes no difference. The exception list for that firewall does not contain any entry for ashWebSv.exe.

I'll reboot again now just to check, but I don't think adding or removing ashWebSv.exe in the firewall exception list is going to make any difference.

Thanks again.

Without trying you won't know for sure, I don't use the XP firewall but there is an entry in it for the web shield scanner.

So it could be a reinstall.

Well uninstalling and re-installing didn't help either. Then one of my brain synapses sparked and I realised that I've actually got  Active Armour running as well as Windows Firewall. So I snooped around until I found the Actuve Armour list of allowed applications and re-enabled ashWebSv.exe.

So now its fine.

Thanks for the support David. Have a great day.
