IE and adware
« on: February 20, 2007, 08:02:58 AM »
The last couple days I have been trying to get rid of mass adware spyware and trojans from the kids desktop computer.  I only had avast running on it ( XP  SP1) and it just wasn't doing it for her.  Don't understand, I'm on torrent sites all night and download constantly and I never have any trouble with my laptop.  I normally run spybot and adware personal se once a month on her computer and it takes care of the issues.  Not this time.  I purchased spyware doctor and discovered another 178 more  issues being missed.  I also ran spysweeper and found ten more issues.  After getting things cleaned i finally got all the ms updates ... and FINALLY installed sp2.  I scanned with spyware doctor again tonight and adaware and it came up clean.  I do still get an ocassional ad in a new ie window now and then but I just can't determine where it is being generated from.  Each window seems to have a different header and the ads are different.  Just curious if anyone has an idea how to trace the file that is generating these ie ads.  It's the last little issue I need to solve.   ???  Or maybe suggest another program to find the issue.

Hi psychojs,

You could try AVG Anti-Spyware. If you have Spyware Doctor running, I would disable real-time protection (Resident Shield) and just use it as an on-demand scanner.

Also post a HijackThis! log as this will allow us to look for clues to identify any pop-up spawning malware.
