Google Chrome pop up
« on: May 16, 2021, 08:20:17 PM »
Whenever I open a new tab on Google Chrome I receive a pop up from Avast that a threat was blocked. I keep on getting this pop and I am not able to stop this pop up when I open a new tab. Can anyone please assist me?

Hello,
in certain situations (usually when you type into address bar, but sometimes also when you are starting a new tab), browser or some of it's plugins can attempt loading various web pages (often those that it has previously accessed). In case of search it is usually preloading pages that it thinks you may want to access, with new tab it is often due to plugins, or due to the new tab page often containing various "often accessed pages". If one of such websites (or one of its components) is malicious, Avast will block it and pop up.

This is pretty problematic to fix, as the solution has nothing to do with Avast itself, but rather the browser needs to be persuaded to not access this page (unless you just want to allow this page to load via exception, which is something that is not ideal but probably better than to uninstall Avast alltogether :( ). Usually the best shot is to clear browsing history (eg. https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95589?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en).

Kind regards,
Ondrej Kolacek

Same issue posted in the viruses and worms sub-forum, though I don't know if that user is also using Avast Mac Security, but they are using Chrome.

I have responded in that topic - https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=273127.0

The same checks on that domain name in the other topic would still apply.  The site is certainly suspicious.

I would suggest trying what I also mentioned to see what effect that has.

I don't use Chrome, so I can't check, but in the past things like this can be from recently added extensions or updated extensions.

I know you have reinstalled it, but that may well restore your extensions from your google account/settings.
Try running Chrome with extensions disabled and see if this happens and or try another browser to run some searches and see if it still happens.

However, bearing in mind what "ondrej.kolacek" posted, this would appear to be a complex issue.  Plus I don't use a Mac, so I wouldn't know where to begin.
