Another request for replacement suggestion: A-T
« on: March 19, 2007, 04:46:25 PM »
I'd been using ewido for my primary A-T defense for quite a while, thanks to recommendations from all over including here.

Unfortunately it seems to be turning into near-garbage, now that AVG has taken it over.  Typically I can now only get onto their update server once every three or four days, although they supposedly update daily including weekends and (like avast) sometimes several times in a day when needed.

And the most recent update (that I was able to get) had way too many probable FPs, including MSN and Alwil's own Toplist.

So I've now ditched it, uninstalled plus cleaned registry, and am looking for a replacement.

At one time a-squared was considered the best alternate A-T among freebies.  Is that still more or less true?  In other words, is it still a good recommendation?

I still use avg-as, and only do a weekly scan (Saturdays), prior to that I get the latest updates and I have had no problem what so ever with the updates. I had been worried that it would go the same way as the AVG AV free where it was very difficult to get updates, but my fears have so far been unfounded.

I don't know if it makes any difference to where you download the copy of avg-as, I got mine from the http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ so perhaps my updates are coming from that site and not grisoft ?

I have tried both SUPERantispyware - Spyware Terminator and I didn't like either of them, it was the interface mainly and some settings I had no idea what they did and I absolutely want to know what a security program is going to do when I choose an option. So they lasted less than a fortnight before being uninstalled, my next choice should I need to abandon avg-as, a.k.a. ewido then a-squared is my next port of call.

 :)  Hi Mike :

I continue to retain AVG Antispyware on my computer; have no trouble
getting daily Updates, though at times I must try 3 times before being
successful . My "2nd" A/T is the FREE version of SUPERantispyware from
www.superantispyware.com ; many very knowledgeable people on the
Wilders Security Forums recommend it and I am seeing more Malware
Experts recommend it to their "clients" .

I've been using a-squared Free for several months because I was having the same problem with AVG.

There's no auto update, but the manual update works fine and they do update daily. And (since it came with Vista) I also have Windows Defender.

I have update problems with AVG AS as well.  Checking 4 computers I find the last successful updates on 2 of them were 28 Feb 07, another on 26 Feb 07, and the 4th on 21 Feb 07.

I think AVG AS is better than A-Aquared when its able to update.  But I've used A-Sqaured for over a year and rely on more than AVG at this point.

Grisoft messed the ewido updates, again... Shame on Grisoft, again.

I always have to press the update button 3 or 4 times before I get through.  I get the update every day though.

It's ridiculous that the user should have to do this... can't they allow a better update service for free? Again, they've messed ewido updates (that did not used to fail as AVGas does).
