icon merge
« on: March 22, 2007, 08:59:59 AM »
when I merge both icons the i-ball still runs as a second icon - is that right?
I can remember of times when both merged icons did run in one ball.

 ???

When merged, the 'i' icon does not appear, but its function, VRDB (virus recovery database) will be working in background. Under the 'a' icon menu you'll see VRDB there...
Hope I could understand what do you want to know...

but it does appear here (WinXP) as a second i-ball every time VRDB is working!

There is an option, as far I remember to remove the 'second', spinning icon, that appears only when VRDB is working...
I'll research a little... wait...

Try this configuration: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=1647.msg10271#msg10271

[VRDB]
MergeIcons=1
Disabled=0
ShowTaskbarIcon=0

Boot. Then, manually start VRDB generation and see if the second icon disappears.

That is correct it indicates that the VRDB is running once complete the icon merges again.

Hmm, then it's not really a merger!

I faintly recall it was that way, the a-ball turns into an i-ball depending on what is running - effectively only one ball on display all the time. If both tasks run the i- and a- alternate.

Ok, it's no drama but it distracts a fair bit when the i-ball periodically pops up, spins a bit and disappears again.

No the 'a' remains there and the 'i' breaks out of the merge, I just generated an VRDB scan and the 'i' breaks out. If the 'a' was replaced then there would be no indication of avast scanning files as it wouldn't be there to rotate, as it did during my test, see image, with the 'a' icon in mid rotation.

The 'i' blue icon never makes the 'a' disappear. The 'a' does not depend on the 'i', depends on your settings.

You can set the VRDB to run at your screen saver time and you won't see the ball as the screensaver is running at that time...

To be more precise:
In programming terms it would mean you employ 3 icons - 'a', 'i' and one animated 'a-i-a-i' icon. This would do the trick to avoid the second spin ball. Just one ball!

OK, that's just a suggestion ;)

But what would trigger the a-i-a-i rotation VRDB generation or a file being scanned because if it rotated for either you wouldn't know what was the reason for animation.

you could do like the a-i-a-i rotation is triggered when both (vrdb && virus) is On otherwise either 'i' or 'a' is triggered. Basically a nested (conditional) loop depending on what's your coding lingo.

again, it's just a suggestion and I don't want to appear imposing..

I added the taskbar line and it certainly will disable (not tested yet) the i-ball but then you have no longer any visual control over the i-ball (functionality).

No... the control of the functionality will be given by the 'a' blue icon submenu VRDB. I see no problem...
